4BarsRest's analyses all the combinations of results from the All England Masters 2001.

Welcome to anorak heaven. We’ve spent a lot of time and energy putting these various tables together so that you can spend an unhealthy amount of time pouring over the endless permutations three men in a box can get up to.

First up is the one that really counted. Conspiracy theorists will point out that YBS again fell at the last – just like 1998 and the G. Brand fiasco. Two 1st places and a 7th just don’t quite add up do they, and it’s a bit galling to lose out to a band that wins the contest for a second time without actually being placed 1st by any adjudicator on either occasion. Still – you pay your money and you get your results.

Note 1 - Where aggregate score is equal, J Scott position overrides.

The second set of tables gives the combined totals that would have occurred if there were only two men in the box – and this is where it starts to get a bit more interesting. If Roy and Jim were together then it would have been a Brighouse, Carlton Main, YBS, Fodens, Yorkshire Imps, Flowers top six – but Roy and Geoff would have come up with Brighouse, YBS, Yorkshire Imps, Fodens, Carlton Main and Ransomes. Jim and Geoff would have had YBS, Brighouse, Flowers, Fairey’s, Fodens and Carlton Main.

Note 2 - Newsome / Whitham In Box - Newsome position overrides.

The last set gives the results if only one of the three would have been left alone to give his verdict. This is where it gets seriously obscure. Roy Newsome would have had to explain a top six that didn’t include YBS and gave the title to DUT Yorkshire Imperial Rothwell, whilst both James Scott and Geoff Whitham would have had YBS making it a hat trick, but would also have seen both Rothwell Temperance and Ever Ready (neither of which in the top six when the judges were paired together)

Overall:

There are lies, damn lies and statistics – so you can spend as much time as you want making out what you want from what we published. The hard truth though is that Brighouse were the Champions and everyone else had to make other arrangements.

As for the future? Well you can either go down the road and get five judges to pass their verdict and drop the top and bottom mark to give a fairer average, or you stick by what you’ve got and hope such a big anomaly doesn’t happen again. Given that bands are such a conservative lot and the bands that did well this year won’t want to change their luck, it could be a long time before a more perfect system comes into force.
