4BR Comments:
1. Harrogate
A. Troms fanfare clean and rund are smooth. basses work well and percussion has presence. Euph pedal not clean but a well played section and nice shapes.
B. Controlled opening. Horns good. Gentle mood caught well. Good cornet solo and lovely ensemble. Trom snatches at entry but soloist combine well.
C. Atmosphere well built. Trom and percussion good. Agitation in music well caught. Again good perc and band work well to close.
Star player: Bass Trom
2. Ashton-u-Lyne
A. Trom fanfare works well but not without splits. Runs are quite smooth but horns are not clean. Bass and euph work is well played but afgain not 100%. Some excitement in the music.
B. Good entry - horn plays well. The music is in control and cornet solo quite lyrical. Nice ensemble work.
C. Music holds well - Good trom. Attack is well marked. Runs createnice feeling to build. It's full on stuff and sounds a little strained to end though.
Star player: Euphonium
3. St Austell
A. Intonation just robs in trom fanfare. Well played semis - the agitation comes through well. Tidy bass work with accomp. Euph copes with solo and there are good upper band sounds. Good cornet work again and well done perc.
B. Nice opening - Flugel copes with solo - although a little unsteady before muted ensemble which is so well shaped. Edgy cornet but fine sop. Solo cornet takes time and plays well. Crack in euph entry. Solo trom plays with assurance.
C. Agitation builds well - bass trom - good entry. Runs flow nicely - could be more exciting before reprise. Good perc keeps up good feel. Closing statement well controlled.
Star player: Soprano
4. Welwyn Garden City
A. Strong troms and the runs are well handled. Basses compliment but there are mistakes around the stand. Euph solo OK but the performance is very "straight" through to agitated runs. Cornets combine quite well and well done basses. Good ensemble and detail shown.
B. Good flugel supported well by band. Nicely shaped music unfolds with muted effects balanced. Sop does well. Cornet a little tentative and not without cracks. Soloists generally do well.
C. Bass trom makes good statement. The mood is well created and MD takes a steady deliberate tempo. The music draws to a bold conclusion.
A performance that had its moments, but overall just a bit off the mark.
Star Player: Flugel
5. Abergavenny Borough
A. Fair trom fanfare. Runs seem to be well handled if a little frenetic. Nice bass work. Euph solo covered by loud timps - solo lines generally gell well but perc dominates a little too much in places. It gets scrappy at times.
B. Bold percussion - solo lines are a little nervy and it doesn't just come off before the cornet entry. Cornet plays with nice feeling to open, but accomp swamps a little. A pity.
C. Controlled opening. Again the accomp overshadows the solo lines. It is a little disjointed but the runs this time work better. A fairly well achieved climax.
A performance that had promise but never quite totally delivered.
Star Player: Solo cornet
6. Alder Valley Brass
A. Good trom entry. Semis just managed. basses and middle band have rhythm - good horn and good attempt euph. Atmospheric stuff - good xylo - slight loss of unity before climax.
B. Music doesn't always sit confortably. Well done sop. Horns have style but a touch loose. Tuning with mutes is out - but music is controlled. Safe cornet solo - moments of unease as moods change.
C. So much better. Played with style and excellent effect (troms and Perc). GOes well to finale.
Star player: solo cornet
7. Livingston Brass
A. Fanfare a little untidy and things stutter along. Well done basses - thing recover. Good solo lines and band get over early problems. Cornet and perc combine well and things are held together. Slack end to movement.
B. Well done flug and accomp. Some cracks appear in muted ensemble work. Music is a bit hard in places but solo lines do well. Music builds with control and shape.
C. The best playing so far - troms lead the way. Good build to a decent finale. Well done - especially under the circumstances coming in as a late sub.
Star player: Bass end
8. City of Coventry Brass
A. Upright troms play well. Brisk stuff but generallt controlled with nice contrast. Neat ensemble and good perc. Well played middle of band to a good end.
B. Well doen flugel and horns. Gentle playing is noted. Good detail again in ensemble. Cornet solo a touch tentative. Fine euph and good feel to music.
C. MD builds things well - exciting and with style and detail. Excellent final flourish.
Star Player: Flugel
9. Pemberton Old Wigan
A. Good fanfare and solid ensemble. Fine sounds and good solo lines. This is balanced and the detail is evident. Excellent solo cornet but troms a little untidy. Great atmosphere to pause.
B. Untidy start - and it takes time to settle. Well done basses and perc. Music has shape and direction. Fine solo cornet. This has real quality. A touch anxious to end though.
C. Excellent exciting playing. This stands out for us so far. Great conclusion.
Star player: Solo cornet
10. Chichester City
A. Good start and this continues for a while. Things are going well - safe and not sorry. Everything in its place to final pause.
B. Tentative start but settles quickly. Sop again good. Some intonation problems just detract. Well done cornet but the flow is ebbing away. A few slips become apparent.
C. Good transition and well done bass trom. Lots of detail - just a bit more oomph needed. Good - build to final statements - a pleasing performance.
Star player: Solo cornet
11. Kippax
A. A solid well controlled start. Good solo lines and ensemble is steady. The odd moment spoils. Atmosphere created - and rhythmic build to pause.
B. Controlled opening - very nice flugel and this spreads around the stand. Warm quality to band sound. Nice cornet work and well done sop. Little waves of uncertainty start to creep in, but it holds together- just.
C. Fine bass trom - music is clean and detailed. Things are back on course. Fine ensemble work and convincing climax. A detailed and committed performance.
Star Player: Soprano
12. Wakefield Met.
A. Steady fanfare into rapid semis that are not that well executed. it's a little loose. Music moves on with good horn sound. Clean euph solo. Muted noted a little fluffy but it builds well. Playing again gets a little loose towards end.
B. Opening takes a few bars to settle but flugel does well - sop is very clear - just wavers in upper register. Simply stated cornet solo just the odd blip. A good section.
C. Music settles well - good ensemble although tempo is up. Starts to get untidy now and this spoils the previous good work. A decent rather than excellent ending is the result. Good playing just fizzled out for us.
Star player: solo horn
13. Gateshead Brass
A. Opening fairly safe and band work hard through opening sections. Soprano comes through well. Just a little loose at times although solo lines are confident. Things improve and go well. perhaps a bit troubled towards the end.
B. Secure opening and the music works - good work here from basses and perc. Conet has nice tine and feel for solo spot. Nearly sop! Very controlled playing leads to agitation - just right.
C. Very good basses - well done trom. Exciting detailed and balanced. A decent performance with troubled moments
Star player: sop
14. Ocean Brass
A. Good opening section. Just runs out of steam in places. Appears a little rushed later. Good solo lines especially xylo. tempo fluxuations are too wide.
B. Tentative opening leads to intonation problems. Music takes time to settle and there are minor errors. Good playing to cornet solo and well done from here.
C. Good build and sense of style. Well done bass trom. Once more runs out of steam - it lacks pace but build is solid. A little too much rubato to end we feel. Dramatic feeling is lost.
Star player: Solo cornet
15. Broxburn Public
A. Solid start - a couple of splits but it works quite well. Solid middle of band. Euph has some difficulty but sop works well. Some good moments and exciting to close.
B. Good ensemble but intonation is poor. Splits are numerous. Pleasing shape to music and solo lines recover. Solo cornet does well and accomp is clean. It just lacks a certain something.
C. A good start. Bass trom shines - support however doesn't. This is not quite up to the mark. Plenty of excitement but gets scrappy. Well pulled together to close.
Star player: Soprano
16. Derwent Brass
A. Good fanfare - just a little loose at times. Middle don't quite get things 100%. Sop plays well and bottom end play strongly. Euph solo played very well and muted cornets impress. Good playing in the section. This performance is getting stronger.
B. Controlled opening with some good playing around the stand. The quiet stuff is controlled just the odd blips detract - a shame. Good tasteful playing from solo cornet and euph takes over nicely.
C. Builds well and is again controlled. The music has conviction and is well played. A convicing movement. Well played.
Star player: Solo cornet
17. Thomas Coaches Mid Rhondda
A. Troms stand to give good fanfare. fast moving parts and quite rhythmic. Some nicely judged dynamics help things along. Middle of band sound a bit muffled at times. Euph solo managed quite well. Good cornet work with perc. Music has good presence and works very well to end.
B. band make comfortable entry to this section. Odd stutter in cornet doesn't hamper. Slight intonation as muted section takes over. Cornet solo is nicely done with good accomp. Euph plays cleanly and trom plays well. Well played stuff.
C. Good dynamics. Troms work very well. Music takes hold with good shape. Plenty to commend - it's tight and exciting! A very good performance.
Star player: Euph.
18. Staffordshire
A. Solid confident fanfare - exciting playing but momentary slips. Music continues with wide dynamic contrast. Broad bass come through before good euph work. detail is heared and with atmosphere. Cornet work is good with perc. Sop does well. Convincing stuff.
B. Nice move into slow section - odd blemishes spoil but nice underneath parts. Good perc - controlled and nice entries. Well judged cornet solo. Style and detail is quite good but snare is very heavy.
C. Atmosphere builds with cresc and tempo - good attack - it's exciting . There is good direction to climax. A generally sound show.
Star player: Solo cornet
