4BR Comments:

1. Shirley Band

1. Takes a few bars to settle. Euph- good work. Impressive crescendo. Cornets fall off notes though before sop. Odd moments of poor tuning spoil a little.

2. A scrappy opening. There's attention to detail and good glock work. Strong troms and a fair end to movement.

3. Tentative bass line but good flugel. All goes in but not 'shining'. Back row do well and flugel handles solos well.

4. Accents work well. Solo cornet is safe as is sop and the music is quite exciting. Decent dynamic contrast abd builds well to climax.

Star player: Flugel - nice solo work
Dodgy moment: Principal cornet brings on make-up bag for that 'Hello' moment.

2. Bendix Kingswood

1. Clean opening. and effective perc work. Music has good lilt. Good controlled ensemble and effective muted work.

2. Exciting playing and good solo lines to open. Just gets a little loose before the close.

3. Little tentative in bass line. Safe flugel and accomp does well. Playing grows stronger and there's clean playing to end.

4. Good opening and again good perc. Accents work well in troms and there's good dynamic contrasts. Well played to conclusion. Exciting stuff.

Star player: percussion - effective throughout.
Dodgy moment: Bass trom talked all the way through!

3. Torbay Brass

1. NOt a bad opening. It's steady stuff but without that bit extra. Competent movement.

2. Clean opening and all seems fine. Troms do well and it finishes well.

3. Steady start and controlled playing in the main. Nice bass line and flugel copes well with solo work. It's a little bland though.

4. Basses good to open. Solo cornet does well to start and general good ensemble. Just lacks a bit of panache. Very workmanlike performance

Star player: Solo trom - solid throughout
Dodgy moment: MDs chequered attire.

4. Becontree Brass

1. Tuning suffers in opening. Nice euph and music recovers. Steady playing but it's unbalanced.

2. Band more confortable here. Solo cnt does well. Troms compliment. An big improvement

3. Nice bass to open. Flugel does ok and there's competent playing but it doesn't glow. Odd tuning problems again spoil. Crack to close.

4. Good opening - the band are more comfortable in the quicker movements. Nice sop line and muted work bands finished better.

Star player: Solo cornet - did exacltly what it said on the tin
Dodgy moment: MDs 'artistic' outfit - all he neede weas the brushes.

5. Moston and Beswick

1. Clean opening with good flugel and basses. Confident start - solid playing across the band. Well done sop.

2. Good solo cornet entry picked up by band. Extovert playing is pleasing with good finish.

3. Opening less confident but flugel OK. Music settles and band play well together with just unsettled links spoiling good music. Band cope well in movement generally.

4. Nice link to final movement. Good paying with plenty of musicianship. Effective bass trom. Good conclusion.

Star player: Sop - clean throughout
Dodgy moment: none came to mind...

6. Northfleet Brass

1. Start suffers when flugel cracks and untity goes. Revoers with warm emsemble sound. Nice basses and lovely flowing quavers. Pity about the opening.

2. Exciting playing - cracking basses! Good movement.

3. Safe to start Flugel OK - nice balance and good depth of sound. Just looses a bit of atmosphere in places.

4. Again basses do well - so does solo cornet. Back row do well with mutes. Solo lines all come through well. A decent show in the main.

Star player: Bass section - solid a a rock throughout.
Dodgy moment: Long delay getting an extension lead

7. Lancashire Life Morcambe

1. Good flugel and euph. It's OK stuff and clean and balanced. Tentative at close.

2. Good rhymic opening. Good playing with dynamic contrast. Good cornet work in quick figure.

3. Again tentative to open. Nice flugel, Controlled ensemble but just needs to be a little more flowing and lyrical.

4. Good snare opening. Bright sounds immediate improvement in band playing again. A decent finish. Good percussion - exciting stuff.

Star player: Flugel - contributed well all through.
Dodgy moment(for us): Too many attractive females - very distracting

8. Penclawdd

1. Fair opening - it flows. Controlled playing which catches attention. Good playing all through.

2. Good rhythmic attack - good stuff but onot without splits. Drive and excitement continue all through. Solo blips become contagious.

3. Decent opening. Soloists play better here. Clean plating in ensemble continues. Music just goes off the boil but euph plays well and sound recovers.

4. Entry to movement a bit disjointed. Very bright tempo and cornets quite clean. Solo cornet then finds it a bit of a challenge. Good troms - sop plays well as does rep. Not bad at all - with moments of quality.

star player: Sop - always there when needed.
Dodgy moment: Percussion play 'dropsy'

9. Rhyl Silver

1. Notes are there but there are intonation problems. Music flows nicely in ensemble. Pleasing Glock and back cornets very neat. Nice tidy ending.

2. Very steady tempo. Assured playing in this movement. Some nicce detail. Last note is not together though.

3. Fair opening. Lots of detail in the accomp. Bass - alittle more controlled here. Nice rhythmic sense and the music benefits. Flugel plays the solo well. Loses it way a little in Glock and accomp.

4. Bass grumbles entry! Music comes alive though with very clean accents. Cornet solo a little untidy.

A performance just off the mark and that may cost them a few places in the overall final list.

Star Player: Euph -a very competant player
Dodgy Moment: Solo horn plays with arm in a sling - not just to keep the instrument warm we think!

10. Croy Parish

1. Competent start just wavering occassionaly. Some nice detail and good muted cornets - nice warm ensemble - odd moments of untogetherness at the end.

2. Good xylophone as band play quite tightly. Nice Glock this time! Good playing and overall a good quality movement.

3. The blips and blobs cause unrest - this movement challenges the band. Tidy muted sop and good cresc and dynamic shape to close.

4. Good perc!! - having a good day. Good cornets and nice dynamic. Band well play well with fine articulation.

The third movement could well undo the chances.

Star Player : Tuned perc - what a team of stars!
Dodgy Moment: MC - caught bronchitis by the sound - every bugger had a good cough in this one! It was like a TB ward at times!

11. Kirkintilloch Kelvin Brass

1. Fair opening, but the odd stutter. Nicely shaped music and generally a good movement with some very effective touches.

2. Good articulation - band play very effectively. The music has impact.

3. A little unsteady at the opening, but the flugel displays a lovely tone in solo. Music has lots of time to speak, with MD's interpretation . Some very good playing all through.

4. A good transition - cracking cornet solo (undone in second solo though) Band are playing very well though. Very effective trombones -Nice interpretation - Good to finish. A neat and effective performance overall.

Star Player: Sop - Clean and bright - just as they should be!
Dodgy Moment: Timp player having a wrestle with the instrument at the beginning. Slightly sexy.

12. Horbury Victoria

1. Music has nice lilt. Safe playing continues and the band playes as a unit. A few unsettled bars to close.

2. Clean and nicely played opening. The shape and feel continues throughout the main body of the movement. A decent close.

3. Good basses to open - with nice flugel. The music has culture and there is warm ensemble playing evident. Well done back row with mutes. Well played euph and a nice ending.

4. Decent transition - its not always together but it recovers. Cornet solo is good, but the sop intonation just robs the effect. Good dynamic playing and the music closes with a flourish.

Star Player: Solo cornet - nicely played throughout.
Dodgy Moment: Percussion - in your own time please!

13. Cockerton Prize

1. A bold opening. Nice ensemble and mute work - the music had breadth. Confident opening movement - a touch loud at times?

2. Detail comes through and the confident playing continues. The music shines in this movement.

3. Good opening from the bottom end and the accomp flugel is sensitive. Music doesn't always flow but the overall playing is quite good generally. Nice musical shapes MD - and the flugel plays well again.

4. Good bass, but cornets dominated by troms. Cornet fights the second solo. Troms good with mutes and there is lots of detail coming through. A flourish of a finish. An enjoyable performance.

Star Player: Flugel - secure throughout.
Dodgy Moment: Woman next too us really enjoyed this one - she was the secretary though!

14. Brackley and District

1. Nice flugel, but euph could project a bit more. There is a nice lilt to the music. Effective horn work penetrates well. Tuning problems towards the end spoil things a bit.

2. Music has character, but it is not without splits. Monster bass trom! Perc add colour. Another untuneful end though.

3. Sensitive start. A warmer sound from the flugel would help with intonation. Well done solo cornet. Untunefulness spolis all the good work at times, but well done basses.

4. Much detail and colour and well done back row. Tends to get a bit clumsy but in the main a more than decent effort. Generally tight throughout.

Star Player: Solo Cornet - solid and safe throughout.
Dodgy Moment: Solo cornet's dodgy barnet!

15. Hade Edge

1. Tight playing and well done flugel - you project well. All goes in but we feel the MD is working too hard. The flow is stifled.

2. Bold attack - the music has good shape and there is plenty attention to detail. The odd splash doesn't detract too much.

3. Nervy opening. Warm sounding flugel. Unison cornet work is very well handled, but the odd solo line is a little out of tune. There is some delicate work apparent though.

4. A little splashy but perhaps percussion a bit too loud to start. Good effort back row! Cultured build to exciting end. Commendable show from a young (with a few wise heads) band.

Star Player: Flugel and solo cornet - confident young players with potential to become real stars.

Dodgy moment: MD in stage uniform with a lightsabre sized baton!

16. Langborough Brass

1. Good opening with nice shape. Music builds and has presence. Solid sounds at a big dynamic. Not quite so tight to close.

2. Crisp opening - middle of band play well. Very big dynamic again but generally clean. Is it too loud?

3. Opening well handled - and nice horn accom. Music links quite well - nice trombone tone. Band play quite well through this section

4. Nice percussion. Very very brisk tempo. Flying fingers cornets! Considering the length of this contest this is enjoyable! Pace is unrelenting. A different interpratation - dynamic and tempo wise.

Star player: Solo trom - solid stuff
Dodgy moment: Will absent bass trom be missed.. unlike the falling percussion.

17. Langley

1. Clean entry - nice flugel. Back cornets just off but music flows quite well.

2. Fairly safe. Band play with a dgree of sparkle. The detail generally comes through.

3. Baritone tentative in opening. Music picks up with good shape. Again detail comes through -nice flugel. Full sounds are well balanced.

4. Good link to movement. Good rep and second cornets -most technical stuff managed well. Bold percussion - detail is heard through to finale. A steady and creditable show.

Star Player: Rep - quality....
Dodgy moment: Woman opening bloody sweet....
