4BR Comments:

1. Kirkby Lonsdale

I: Good start - just alittle heavy in the accented rhythms. Good neat stuff spoilt by some untidy ensemble. Good sop at end.

II: Tuning spoils some steady playing. A little disjointed in places and muted entries al little off beam! Good soloists though.

III: Not bad at all. Some blips and blobs but overall well done. Tired towards end and some detail lost. A fair old start.

Star player: Sop - good throughout but uniform didn't fit!
Dodgy moment: Muted cornets in 2nd mvnt.

2. Conwy Town

I: Fine opening - Good sounding band. Lots of neat playing and dynamic contrasts. A good movement.

II: Well in tune and flugel shines throughout. Triplet motifs not always right before 9. Well done again though.

III: Good style with plenty of detail and dynamic contrats. Band tires towards the end, but overall one to watch out for. Welsh band playing Welsh tunes very well.

Star player: Flugel - very nice.
Dodgy moment: Euph cover on instrument - very Blue Peter!

3. Hungerford Town

I: A little loose and untuneful to start. It needs a bit more energy. Well done sop - both times. Generally untidy though.

II: Again looseness spoils. Fine cornet, but ensemble tuning lets things down. Good effort to end.

III: Good style, but it's all a bit loose. Bass trom enjoys himself! Is he a Taff? This is the best playing so far. Just the looseness spoils this one.

Star player: Honkingly good Bass trom.
Dodgy Moment: Bass trom again - 3rd movement wasn't a solo item!

4. Ware Brass

I: A bit OTT - steady on! Tuning spoils a big band sound.

II: Again a bit OTT - More Tom Jones than Charlotte Church for us for a lullaby. Tuning spoils again.

III: Bold start - best playing by far. Controlled, and it's better for it. Good style. A pity the first two movements weren't as good.

Star Player: Euph - neat and tidy throughout.
Dodgy Moment: MD's Dicky Bow - Criminal!

5. Lochgelly

I: Confident stuff! - with lots of detail and dynamics. Lots of quality in sop and ensemble. Careful Bass trom! Well handled movement.

II: A little heavy but has style. A few blips and blobs, but the overall picture is nice.

III: Confident playing again and troms lead well. Some classy playing and good direction from the middle. Super ending! Good show.

Star Player: Sop - a wise old head.
Dodgy Moment: Bass Trom - up and at 'em in 1st movement.

6. Wem Jubilee

I: Controlled playing - tidy entries with good dynamic contrasts. Perc add colour.

II: Well shaped. Again soloists do well. Good plating generally.

III: The band play with confidence and with good sounds. Good perc again. Overall a good show.

Star player: Solo Cornet - plays with style
Dodgy moment: MD kiising the sop player

7. Hayle Town

I: Steady tempo to start - bright sounds. Cornet use direction to stimulate. Good mvnt with clean playing.

II: Great direction and well played throughout.

III: Not always clean at start - but good balance and dynamic contrasts. Good sostonuto and exciting to finish.

Star Player: sop - solid throughout
Dodgy moment: Was that "Right Said Fred" on percussion!

8. Jubilee Brass (Oxford)

I: Good tempo and shape but blips and blobs spoil.

II: Steady playing but thre tuning wavers from time to time - this detracts from the musical picture - a shame.

III: Good attack - the music flows well. This is their best playing. Attebtion to detail is good but the tuning again spoils.

Star player: Euph - warm sounds
Dodgy moment: The mute juggling....

9. Long Eaton

I: Neat and controlled stuff. Lots of effort to observe style and the dynamics. Well done sop and solo cornet.

II: Tuning lets down some nice stylish playing - it grates a bit too much. Again a decent effort.

III: Again controlled playing - only the odd blip detracts. It tires towards the end, but MD keeps things together. Good end and big cheer from someones Dad.

Star Player: Bottom 3rd cornet and bass drum - two tiny tots who were stars

Dodgy Moment: First female sighted with handbag on stage!!

10. Pendennis Brass (Falmouth)

I: We need some tempo MD! Generally too steady and the flow is lost. Some fine moments from sop and solo cornets and trom, but speed (or the lack of it here) kills

II: A little more flow needed. Super solo lines from key players but the music needs the baby to be rocked gently, not left alone!

III: More like it! This is so much better and the soloists again shine. Lots of good stuff but just a bit too careful overall.

Star Player: Solo trom - 4 foot dot pocket dynamo
Dodgy Moment: Jackets off - plenty of badly ironed shirts!

11. Jedforest Instrumental

I: Confident playing - a little untidy in places and tuning a touch out. A few nasty blips spoil a good effort.

II: Again tuning detracts from a good effort. Soloists do well and the overall shape is good.

III: Confident again, but it is the nasty blips and blobs that are costly. It runs away a bit, but well done timp! Loses control a touch to end. A good effort though.

Star Player: Bass Trom - Crusty the Clown lookalike with a set of blue bagpipes on his head!

Dodgy Moment: It's a bad hair day! Brilliant stuff - 96 points for entertainment - all the shades of blue under the sun.

12. Linthwaite

I: Comfortable playing to open. Full sounds with definition. Blips and blobs just detract. Tuning wavers at times.

II: Nice troms and warm ensemble sounds. Tuning again hampers the quality and the splits at the end spoil.

III: OK stuff, but it doesn't excite - but it does get better. Some good attention to detail and a controlled sostenuto. Good ending with vitality.

Star Player: Solo trom - classy throughout.
Dodgy Moment: Dodgy tuning and a bit of a nodding snare drum player!

13. Hetton Silver

I: Balanced control opening with style. Lots of definition comes through - a few dodgy moments in the solo lines but doesn't detract.

II: Just off the mark as unease besets the playing. Trom and solo cornet take control and get things back on track.

III: Staedy playing but a little unbalanced at times. Nice tempo and reading. Just a few too many errors perhaps to impress the judges.

Star player: Solo Cornet - steady and musical
Dodgy Moment: Little 3rd cornet lost sense of direction when walking on stage!!

14. Porthaethwy Menai Bridge

I: Very steady tempo. Controlled playing in the main. Good dynamics just the odd moments of unease in the solo lines.

II: Nice flugel. Good style by conductor makes for good playing. Solid movement unfolds, but just a bit of uncertainty at the nd.

III: Brisk opening. A little unbalanced. Good glock and percussion. Music flows from here and has panache. A fine ending to a very decent show.

Star player: Flugel horn - classy throughout.
Dodgy Moment: Orchestrated set spoilt by slapstick entry on stage from solo cornet!

15. Douglas Town

I: Very deliberate and marked playing. MD very much in control of things. Good brillante before end of movement and nice close.

II: Broad toned playing but tentative moments in soloists detract. Intonation is poor in places and the close suffers.

III: Pronounced troms throughout this movement - overblown at times! Perc out of place and ahead of the game as well. Good dynamic effects towards end. Decent close.

Star player: 3rd cornet player - small but perfectly formed!
Dodgy Moment: Perc player looked like an MC in his dinner suit - no uniform mate?

16. Sandhurst Silver

I: Some nervy sounds to start. Good effort sop/solo cornet. thing not always apot on - shame sop to end.

II: Sonorous euph but nervy flug. Music moved well with some good sounds. Good bass sounds towards end with good muted cornets. end a little loose.

III: Seems to run away a little at times - perc and band not always together. Exciting tempo to end but semis don't always speak.

Star player: Euph - nice sounds
Dodgy moment: Sop - end of 1st movement

17. Emley Brass

I: Not together to start and generally insecure. Sop nearly so very good. Tuning suffers in louder dynamics.

II: Nerves get the better. This makes things untuneful. Thank you horn! - confident work. Sop again good. Good end to movement.

III: Secure playing but gets a little harsh at times. Good timp work. The style isn't always spot on but good effort.

Star player: Sop - solid throughout
Dodgy moment: Opening sections in 2nd mvmt.

18. St Dennis

I: Confident plating and fine band sound. Per a little heavy handed at times though. Lots of details and solo work well played. A touch untidy to end but good movement.

II: Again confident stuff. Perhaps a bit heavy but it all goes in. All in place and well shaped to a fine close - it's going well...

III: Fine playing - band sound is excellent. Detail and dynamics well observed - odd slips do not spoil. An exciting ending to a fine show. Well done.

Star player: solo cornet - led by example.
Dodgy moment: When womans mobile went off next to us!

19. Wardle

I: Bold and confident start - a little heavy but good full band sound. Needs a bit more dynamic contrast. Good solo lines and there is a feel of forward motion to this.

II: Again its confident - if a little above the dynamic marking. Solid stuff and has a good lilt. Perhaps it needs to be a bit quieter.

III: Fine start - the louder stuff is very well handled. Lots of detail and plenty to admire. Well done.

Start player: Euph - stylish playing
Dodgy moment: Some old granny clapping at end of second movement.

20. Leicestershire Co-op Snibston Charnwood

I: Steadt tempo - lacks a touch of sparkle - but is safe. Timp player enjoys herself! Solid with a few nasty clips which detract.

II: A little heavy in style and dynamic. flug does well - but others falter. B/Trom a touch OTT! the quiet stuff is taking casualties.

III: It's all a bit untidy and scrappy. It improves but is too much loose playing. Overall a little too scrappy.

Star player: Flugel - a fine redhead!
Dodgy moment: A few of the hair-dos

21. Timperley

I: Clean and confident - musically very controlled. Musical baritone. Stylish playing throughout.

II: Ensemble is well placed - good sounds all across. Lovely solo cornet - all is going confidently.

III: Stylish from the off - builds well and dynamics well observed. Quality stuff. Excellent show.

Star player: Baritone - great tone.
Dodgy moment: The perc players who looked like the duo from the Lambert and Butler adevert.
