Since the tragic accident involving the Lawrence Family over Christmas, the band has all pulled together and endeavoured to put their best foot forward. They have a number of new members and a couple of players who have come to the band's aid so the band is at full strength.

The band has had a busy schedule with two rehearsals per week plus sectionals and weekend rehearsals. They are still committed to local council performances during Nationals preparation a pre-Nationals concert was held in conjunction with the Holroyd Council CityFest 2006.
The Band fridge is almost empty after every rehearsal the band seems to be in excellent drinking form leading up to the Nationals.
The commitment to rehearsals from some players has been outstanding; one player was caught in Adelaide on a business trip and caught a late flight to be back for rehearsal and then the same player caught in Melbourne jumped another late flight to be at another rehearsal again (going straight from the airport to the bandroom on both occasions).
Several band members have recently had new babies yet this has not stopped them from attending rehearsals.
Notably, the Band recently purchased a new triangle and beater for use at this year's Nationals.
This is a very different band from previous Holroyd Bands with several new signings in key chairs around the band. The depth of talent will be on display around the band throughout the sections, however there are still several players preparing for their first A Grade performances.
Listen out for two very exciting players: David Zucker on Timpani/Percussion and Tara Grimm on Bass Trombone.

Band is in very good shape and looking forward to once again competing at the Australian Championships. It is good to see so many bands taking part at this year's contest. May the best band win!
Conductor Nigel Weeks always expects maximum attention to detail and musicianship from his players, and this year is no exception, with an extremely busy rehearsal schedule in the lead up to this contest. Band has added a few weekend rehearsals to their contest preparation. Rehearsals have been well attended and structured. Progress has been consistent over the past 2 weeks. Is there ever enough time for preparation?
Dalewool Auckland Brass has had a busy build up to this contest, with a major concert held only a couple of short weeks ago in Auckland's Holy Trinity Cathedral.
'Variations on an Enigma' has been a good choice and the band has enjoyed the very challenge, both technically and musically.
Dalewool Auckland Brass are well aware that there will be tough competition from the Australian bands. They have enjoyed the build up to contest and will be looking forward to giving of the their very best on stage!
The band always enjoys playing in the superbly run Australian contest, and especially in the beautiful acoustic of the Brisbane City Hall. We are looking forward to what looks to be one of the most competitive contests in recent history.

Rehearsals are going along as planned, with excellent morale amongst the group. The band has progressed well over the last three months and the conductor is excited with the improvement of the younger players, some who are playing principal parts!
The test piece has thrown up a lot of challenges to many of the players, but all members agree that it has been a great selection as a test piece which has pushed players to greater levels.
Earlier in the year, sectionals were held once a week and full band once a week. That gave the conductor a better indication of where the trouble spots might be. The band had a camp over the Labour Day long weekend and has also rehearsed in a number of different venues, including Mazenod College. Over the last few weeks, the band has been rehearsing three nights a week, plus a pre-nationals concert.
Since last years nationals there have been numerous changes to the band lineup. The band has had approx 17 new members join up, including now a team of four percussionists! This has brought a wealth of experience into the band, and there is now a good mix of adults and younger players.
Over the last 18 months the band has continued to improve, and is in definitely in better shape then at last years Nationals. The band is very much looking forward to playing their pieces in Brisbane and is interested in finding out where they fit in the nation's highest brass band grade.

K&N is rehearsing intensively and coming to grips with the musical challenges of the Test, which the conductor considers to be an excellent selection, providing all the ingredients for brass excellence, technical, musical and solo playing.
The band's journey to Brisbane will be enjoyed by every member and whilst the result is considered important and the band will perform well, the camaraderie which banding provides will outweigh all else.

Moreland is preparing well and expects to improve on their result from last year. The band has been building well with the addition of two players from across the ditch.
The conductor and band have really enjoyed the test piece, and note that is particularly challenging for the middle and lower end.
Moreland has not undertaken extensive rehearsals, preferring to focus on expressiveness rather than risk over-rehearsing. The band expects that they have not rehearsed as much as other bands attending. Some weekend practices have been held in addition to the band's regular rehearsal schedule.
Moreland is looking forward to the trip, both musically and socially.

The band has had solid rehearsals endeavouring to achieve maximum progress. In particular, The Feds are looking forward to having Alicia Ludi-Schutz from Tanunda in the Barossa Valley, South Australia, join them for the contest.
The band's goal is to play the best they possibly can (and enjoy it) the rest is over to the adjudicator.

St Kilda Brass is really are on a high at the moment, with a very busy concert and contest schedule lined up this year. Forthcoming concerts with Simone Rebello and Brett Baker promise to be momentous occasions, the prospect of which really has the band in top gear. The band was successful at the Otago Southland championships last week before making the journey to Brisbane. If recent performances are anything to go by this band will certainly be one to watch.
St Kilda have welcomed back John Lewis from Brighouse & Rastrick to lead the Cornet section and Musical Director Steve Miles will occupy the Principal Euphonium chair, to complete a duo that has been thrilling audiences in the UK for a number of years and make way for long time Professional Conductor of the band Peter Adams to make a guest appearance.
The band has strengthened its ranks considerably since last year and welcomes Hamish Miller (Repiano) Stacey Ward (2nd Cornet) and Ian O'Malley (2nd Baritone). Gareth Hoddinott will also replace Catherine Neal, who is unfortunately still recovering from illness, on the Front Row Cornet team.
The standard of the band has risen to a new level in the last 8 months and the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the players in the build up to the contest just goes to show how intent they are in furthering their success.' Steve Miles (MD St Kilda Brass)
The band's leader, John Lewis, is also impressed with the contest preparations and commented I have to think back to 1992 when the band won the New Zealand Championships to remember The Saints playing so well.'
St Mary's Band Club Brass Band (New South Wales)
Current Downunder Ranking: 9
Conductor: Ken Bradley
Principal Players
Soprano: Rodd Kuiper
Cornet: Phil Dokmanovic
Flugel: John Webster
Tenor Horn: Jonathan Gatt
Baritone: Melissa Brady
Trombone: Gareth Lewis
Euphonium: Mark Howcroft
EEb Bass: Alan Owens
BBb Bass: Larry Prestwidge
Percussion: Matt Riley
This will be the third competition in which St Mary's has played the test piece, so a greater part of their rehearsal time has been devoted to the own choice program.
The band's team may not be as strong as previously, however they are playing with excitement.
Three full Sunday rehearsals have assisted the band in its preparations. They are realistic about their prospects for this contest, and whilst other bands may be seeded higher, St Mary's is looking forward to a strong performance.
Waratah Brass Newcastle (New South Wales)
Current Downunder Ranking: 3
Conductor: Ron Prussing
We have been unable to get in contact with the Waratah band to get some comments and information for our preview; however they are a consistently very strong performer at the Australian Nationals.
In line with the band's ranking, we expect that this band will finish well into the upper half of the field.
Willoughby City Band (New South Wales)
Current Downunder Ranking: 17
Conductor: Andrew Snell
Principal Players
Soprano: Simon Wolnizer
Cornet: Brian McGuiness
Flugel: Andrew Hulme
Tenor Horn: Margaret Evans
Baritone: Anna Gregg
Trombone: Peter O'Brien
Euphonium: Jeff Ma
EEb Bass: Duncan Spry:
BBb Bass: Mick Donohoe
Percussion: Jono Hughes
Rehearsals are going very well - the band's getting better every rehearsal and you can't ask for more than that!
The conductor is extremely happy with band's progress and preparation - they are in a rebuilding phase but have 100% attendance, a great atmosphere and a band that is moving in the right direction. The conductor doesn't expect to be challenging for top spot this year, but if things keep moving the way they are at the moment...bring on 2007!
The test has given the whole band a workout and has meant a great deal of sectional work. It's a true band test, every player has their important moment(s) and no-one can hide!
The band has welcomed back Brian McGuiness to the top chair and Jeff Ma from St Mary's on Principal Euphonium - two great players who I'm sure will do the band proud in Brisbane.
The conductor has been with Willoughby for around five months, which is not a long time to make wholesale changes, but the band is responding extremely well to his 'different' way of doing things. The Walmsley era was a great one for Willoughby, but all conductors are different and the band are having to adjust to a very different philosophy of style, musicianship and most of all sound (not to mention British sense of humour!). They're doing well, but it's a long journey and they're only in the early stages.
The conductor will be thrilled with a position in the top half of the field. There are some very strong bands at Brisbane and, while the band has moved on in leaps and bounds, he is trying hard to be sensible and not set unrealistic expectations with the players.
B Grade - TEST: Purcell Variants (Meechan)
Bundaberg Municipal Band No 1 (Queensland)
Conductor: Robert Rotar
Bundaberg has enjoyed preparing the test piece, and although challenging, they consider the piece to have some lovely musical moments.
Preparation for the contest has been nothing out of the normal; however the band has a pre-Nationals concert at the Playhouse Theatre in Bundaberg on Sunday 9th April. Their soloists get to have a run-through and gain performance experience. The band has also held a couple of concerts leading up to the contest. Bundaberg's No 1 and No 2 bands enjoyed camps early in the year.
The conductor is happy with the band's progress, noting that the band is gaining more maturity over the last couple of years.
Whilst the band has several key players, the band works very much as a team, with the principal players working to bring out the best in others. Key players such as Nathan Wilshire (Soprano), Robin Hume (Cornet), Lesley Hume (Flugel), Bernadette Rotar (Tenor Horn), Neil McCabe (Baritone), Fred Coleman (Eupho) and Luke Aaron (Trombone) provide exemplary leadership of the team at Bundaberg, and this approach reflects the nature and character of the band.
Cairns Brass (Queensland)
Conductor: Maureen Cameron
Principal Players
Soprano: Christopher George
Cornet: Andrew Eather
Flugel: Gary Sugden
Tenor Horn: Kate Sugden
Baritone: Andrew George
Trombone: Rohan Howard
Euphonium: Drew Walden
EEb Bass: Mark Wheeler
BBb Bass:
Percussion: David Knight
Rehearsals have been progressing very well for Cairns Brass. The usual balance of sectional, individual and band rehearsals have been underway since February. Most weekends have been taken up with extended rehearsal time culminating in marching and drill practice at the local school grounds.
The band is in good shape and has a strong and committed team who are working 100% to produce the best they can for the competition. After initial worries about this new piece for the band, they are enjoying rehearsing the test and in particular the middle movement it is certainly a test of listening, tuning and nerve for the soloists. A very good choice of piece this year, something we've certainly enjoyed getting our teeth into. The very young percussion section has gained much from the piece, and is playing with a maturity beyond their years. Cairns Brass is certainly very proud of them.
Bryan Hurdley, who now lives and works in Cairns, has been helping with preparations for the competition. Along with the usual 1001 rehearsals, Bryan has been involved with sectionals and full rehearsals in the lead up to the competition. It has been a tough few weeks and individually, the band has progressed, each player working tirelessly on their own preparation at home.
The band is certainly on full steam ahead, and will be going to the Nationals as strong as they have ever been. They all know that they have given this competition everything they have, and as a result are a better team for it.
Gosford City Brass (New South Wales)
Conductor: Anthony Timmins
Principal Players
Soprano: Kindi Smith
Cornet: Mark Downy
Flugel: Kevin Waters
Tenor Horn: Ellen Kavanagh
Baritone: Tulara Webster/Jared Lamb
Trombone: Tom Kavanagh
Euphonium: Phillip Rutherford
EEb Bass: Lisa
BBb Bass:
Percussion: Nick Downy
Gosford is generally happy with preparations. The band is down a few players who couldn't make the trip, which has meant some changes of instruments and parts, but it's coming together.
The band considers the test to be not the greatest piece, but there are nice parts. The 2nd movement is quite nice.
Gosford had two rehearsals with Peter Walmsley filling in for his son-in-law (Anthony). Anthony is the band's guest conductor in the first place. Gosford has been happy to have Peter and enjoyed his hard work in preparing the band.
It's a big jump from C grade to B grade at the moment, so the band is going up there to play well and show that their promotion was well earned.

Sunnybank Brass No 1 (Queensland)
Conductor: Chris Moffat
Principal Players
Soprano: Bradley Stewart
Cornet: Kirsty Biggs
Flugel: Alan Laing
Tenor Horn: Madge King
Baritone: Laura Hughes
Trombone: Bruce Butler
Euphonium: Vanessa Trevor
EEb Bass: Mark Biggs
BBb Bass:
Percussion: Adrian Dadd
The band has been rehearsing twice a week for the past two months, with at least one weekend off each month to refresh the minds and bodies. Given the many changes in personnel, the conductor has been very happy with the band's progress and preparation. The level of performance continues to improve from week to week.
The band has enjoyed the challenge of Purcell Variants and is looking forward to performing the piece.
The band had a camp in mid-March at Laidley in QLD as a lead up to the competition, as much for the band members to get to know each other as it was to focus on their pieces in the lead up to the contest. Sunnybank Brass No 1 has undergone several key personnel changes over the Christmas break, including that of Musical Director.
The band is working very hard to perform at its best, and that is the only performance benchmark the band has set. The conductor said that they cannot control the performance capabilities, skill level & ability of the other bands within their Grade, so their only goal is to focus on their own performance.
Toowoomba Municipal No 1 (Queensland)
Conductor: Malcolm Gaydon
Principal Players
Soprano: Brad Smith
Cornet: Alan Skerman
Flugel: Jonathan Lithgow
Horn: John Redfearn
Baritone: Angela Kajewski
Trombone:
Euphonium: Graham Anderson
EEb Bass: David Carroll
BBb Bass: Mike Gowdie
Percussion: Mark Nuss
Rehearsals are progressing steadily for Toowoomba, however preparation could be much better as the band has only been able to achieve one extra rehearsal due to members being involved with other local bands and the musical Sweet Charity about to open in Toowoomba.
Usual rehearsals are Wednesday nights for two hours. The band is yet to have a rehearsal with 100% role up. Unfortunately brass players in Toowoomba are spread very thin.
The band has enjoyed the test. The conductor considers it to be a little different but still interesting to play and to listen to.
Toowoomba band lost their soprano cornet player earlier in the year due to impending motherhood but were lucky enough to find a good replacement.
The conductor thinks the band will go well, but says it all boils down to one person's view on the day. Toowoomba is the current State Champion B Grade band, so even though their preparation this year won't meet their full potential, they don't expect to disgrace themselves.

Townsville Brass (Queensland)
Conductor: Kim Lofthouse
Rehearsals have been progressing well and the performed its contest repertoire in a concert at St. James's Cathedral, Townsville on Sunday, April 2nd. The band feels, therefore, that they are pretty much on schedule with preparations. This is despite several significant changes in band personnel since they started working on the pieces for the Nationals.
Four key players, Chris Baldwin (Solo Cornet), Sarah Carminati (Flugel Horn), Ben Crocker (Solo Euphonium) and Matt McGeachin (Bass Trombone) left Townsville in February to study at The Con and UQ. Three of these four will be returning to Townsville and will be taking part in the Contest. Matt has joined Brisbane Excelsior and will be playing with them in the Nationals. In addition, several other players have left the Band or taken leave of absence in the past few months. Fortunately the band has been able to replace them with new members, some (Rob Jones on Eb Bass) as young as 14; just part of the daily reality of regional banding.

Warringah Concert Brass (New South Wales)
Conductor: John Saunders
Principal Players
Soprano: James Owen
Cornet: James McCudden
Flugel: Vaughan Price
Tenor Horn: Jeffrey Markham
Baritone: Kevin Dallas
Trombone: Timothy Robards
Euphonium: Robert O'Brien
EEb Bass: Dianne Frazer
BBb Bass:
Percussion: Anthony Brahe
Warringah Concert Brass is very excited about competing at the Nationals in Brisbane. Conductor, John Saunders, has developed WCB into a very competitive unit over recent years. John has been acknowledged as one of the leading contemporary Music Directors in Australia after his recent appointment as Music Director of the NSW Police Concert Band.
Rehearsals are going to plan with the band being challenged and forced to work hard by the own choice music selected.
WCB are the current NSW B Grade Champions and including a win at Newcastle in 2003, have been placed at each Nationals since 2002.
WCB has been very fortunate to welcome 6 new members over recent months. Adding to an already strong team is Scott Marsh, John Corley, Robert Turner, Phil Wilson, Colin Burrows and Alexandra Myers.
The band is optimistic of a good result at Brisbane.
