2007 New Zealand Brass Band Championships - Retrospective: Youth Grade
10-Jul-2007The freshness and enthusiasm from the future of our movement was obvious at this years Youth Band Competition.
The Youth Contest is still very much in its infancy which was indicated by the small number of entries in this event - only two bands. The difference in standard between the two bands was significant - the Pelorus Trust Wellington Youth Brass being clear winners on the day.

Pelorus Trust Wellington Youth Brass smile sweetly as winners of this years Youth Contest
The number of juniors participating was encouraging. It is obvious, however, there is a distinct shortage of tuba players - a world-wide issue at all levels.
This was the first year of the youth compere, which provided a different spin on the event and added interest and appeal. This concept is worthy of further development.

Kumeu Brass Auxillary compete in its first ever National Championships
Both Musical Directors, Aaron Lloyd with Pelorus and Claire Bymolt with Kumeu Brass Auxillary band, had obvious rapport with their youngsters and chose repertoire wisely.
The Youth bands on show at the Nationals are comparable to those in Australia and deserve further nurturing and development.
