Elliott Brass Professional Model Euphonium Plus

Review: Kim Holly Thorp-Simpson

I first became familiar with the Elliott Professional Euphonium in May 2015 while working in Hong-Kong, where I met Elijah-Yue (the owner and founder of ElliottBrassltd) who introduced me to the company’s range of products.

After both seeing and hearing the range of intermediate and professional instruments first hand, it was clear that Elijah and his company were committed to the highest standards of development and design of their brass instruments - from the choice of materials to the craftsmanship required in making them.

Test

On testing the Professional Plus model euphonium, my first impression was with its immaculate finish and the quality of the feel of the instrument in my hands.  Those outstanding design and aesthetic qualities were reinforced however when I can to play it.

I simply felt so comfortable, as the instrument sung with ease across all registers. Pitching wasn’t an issue and it felt like I had been playing the instrument for a long time.  This was an instrument that did it all.

I have since worked with Elijah to create a strong relationship with Paul Andrews, who owns the well-established and highly regarded brass repair and renovation company BrassToff.

The company is now the sole UK Retailer of Elliott Brass, and I now have the opportunity to have hands on experience in the Elliott workshop, constantly improving the range and working alongside Paul and Elijah in testing new models. With the range of instruments available at Elliott Brass, there is now model suitable for all abilities - from beginner to the top-line professional.

The Valves

Elliott Brass valves are uniquely tailored to minimise air loss reduction. The casing/piston interface is so precise, resulting in not only quiet, but efficient valve action - directing the maximum amount of airflow through the tubing of the instrument.

The superb design controls the air you are using, creating a certain amount of backpressure - allowing the player to ‘sit back’ and let the instrument do the work!

The Trigger

Euphoniums with triggers have been around for some time, and are essential performance aids.

Used judiciously, especially as the playing environment changes (ensemble, temperature, tiredness etc) the need to have a flexible, efficient and responsive trigger mechanism is essential.

Here the Elliott offers perfect functionality; with a trigger action that is smooth and requires little effort to operate. The main tuning slide can be adjusted easily with a holding screw and it comes with a clear guard at the back of the instrument to stop it rubbing on any clothing during operation.

Intonation

In my opinion the Elliott Professional Euphonium is quite superb throughout the range. As with all brass instruments, tuning is more of an art than science at times, but with such a well centred tonality and the inherent flexibility that this instrument offers, you are left feeling supremely confident that intonation isn’t a problem

Having used the instrument in wind ensembles, brass ensembles, orchestral and as an accompanied soloist, I can say that the sound, tuning and intonation is as good as anything any rival can offer.

case

Extra thoughts...

With such quality to perform on - from the build quality and design, to the valves and intonation, it is also good to know that the same levels of craftsmanship have been out into the production of the case that it comes in.

The instrument comes well protected in a very modern hard wearing, robust polycarbonate case, neatly designed with four wheels for use of transport.

Having taken the instrument with me on my travels around the world, I can assure people that it can withstand anything any clumsy airport freight handler can throw at it!

Overall:

The Elliott Professional Euphonium Plus is an instrument to watch out for and to seriously consider when you are next looking to make a purchase.

If its quality in every aspect that you are looking for then it could well be the instrument for you – so get in touch with Paul Andrews at Brass Toff Ltd and make sure you find out for yourself. You will not be disappointed.
