Steve started playing a brass instrument at the age of 8 joining his local band Porthywaen Silver. He went on to study music at Liverpool and Trinity College of Music before embarking on a career in performing arts as conductor, teacher, player, and adjudicator. Steve has performed with, and conducted bands all over the UK including Tredegar, Fodens, Staffordshire, Sovereign, Cwmaman, Point of Ayr, Porthywaen, Jaguar, Royal Buckley and Jackfield plus many lower section bands. For six years Steve was Musical Director of The Band of West Mercia Police in tandem with his freelance work as a trumpet and cornet player with many brass bands, orchestras and in theatrical productions all over the UK as well as for the BBC and ITV. As a keyboard player, Steve works throughout the UK providing music for weddings, civic functions and black tie dinners etc.

For ten years he was Musical Director of North Powys County Youth Brass Band in Mid Wales and then moved over the border working part time on the brass team for the Shropshire County Music Service School of Music. Until recently Steve was Head of the Expressive & Performing Arts and Community Education Department at Belvidere School Technology College in Shrewsbury leading a department specialising in art, dance, drama and music. In January 2010 Steve commenced as Head of Centre at a school in the West Midlands for children with social and emotional issues using the power of music and drama together with art as a therapy tool to help the young people.

Steve is in great demand all over the UK and abroad as conductor and adjudicator officiating at national and local competitions. He is a composition and music performance examiner for ‘A’ level and GCSE music examinations, Arts Award Advisor for Trinity Guildhall and regularly engaged as tutor on brass band courses and workshops throughout the UK. At the NABBC convention in 2008 he delivered a lecture to members of the National Association of Brass Band Conductors on the art of conducting and personnel management and directed a workshop for NABBC members in the South West on the regional test pieces.

Steve was one of the first recruits on the Welsh Regional Council adjudicators training scheme led renowned adjudicator, Mr Brian Buckley. He then enrolled on a NABBC/Salford University course successfully achieving a Licentiate diploma in brass band adjudicating graduating in July 2006. The examiners for the LDBBA qualification are Dr Roy Newsome and Mr Richard Evans.

Steve is member of the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators, the National Association of Brass Band Conductors and a jury member (representing Wales) on the European Brass Band Association official adjudicators list.
