Injection of youth boosts Grimethorpe's ranks

Three talented young players have joined Grimethorpe Colliery Band as Yorkshire giant signals new direction in recruitment.

Grimethorpe Colliery Band
Grimethorpe have added a trio of talented young players to their ranks.

The busy period of personnel activity at Grimethorpe continues with news of youthful additions to their cornet and trombone sections.

Richard Jones joins on bass trombone, whilst Bethan Plant comes in on repiano cornet with Liam Boyd joining the solo cornet bench.

Massive privilege

Richard told 4BR: "I'm delighted to be offered an opportunity like this. It's a massive privilege and I'm looking forward to my time with the band and will hopefully enjoy many memorable performances. I'd like to thank Old Silkstone and Sam Fisher and my first ever teacher Graham Dean and Knottingley Concert Brass."

Grimethorpe's principal trombone Chris Gomersall is certainly looking forward to him joining the section: "Richard is a great young trombonist and I've been impressed by his playing since he attended our Youth Band four years ago."

Goal

Meanwhile, Bethan added: "I'm very excited as it will be a great opportunity to further my playing with the challenges ahead. Playing full time with a band like Grimethorpe is a lifetime goal for any cornet player from Yorkshire — so to be able to accept the position at the end of my first year of college is a great."

And with Liam Boyd making the move from Rothwell Temperance, little wonder principal cornet Roger Webster is pleased with the new additions to his section: "I'm delighted Bethan and Liam join us.

Bethan is a talented young player and yet another star from the nurturing environment of Elland Youth Band, whilst Liam is also such a promising young talent studying at the Royal Northern College of Music."
