David Gillson, Grant Jameson, Matilda Lloyd and Ryan Watkins will compete in the final of the 2014 BBC Radio Young Brass Award at Media City in Salford tonight.
Quartet
The talented quartet were announced as finalists on a special programme broadcast on BBC Radio 2 last month by semi final judges, Paul Cosh and Ewan Easton from a field of eight participants.
Four instrumentalists
The final will showcase four different instrumentalists: Matilda Lloyd plays trumpet, whilst David Gillson is a cornet student at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester in addition to playing with the Fairey Band.
Tongwynlais Temperance's, euphonium star, American, Grant Jameson, studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, with Brighouse & Rastrick trombonist, Ryan Watkins, named as the fourth finalist.
Gregson, Bousefield to judge
Making the all important decision on who will be crowned the 2014 winner will be Ian Bousfield, Catherine Moore and Professor Edward Gregson.
Speaking on BBC Radio 2 on Thursday evening to Frank Renton, Professor Gregson outlined what he believed the three judges will be looking for when it comes to choosing the winner:
"Without doubt, we will be looking at the technical qualities, but almost certainly beyond that, we will all be looking for this mark of musical personality".
Grimethorpe, Frank and Ken
Accompanying all of the four finalists during the final will be Grimethorpe Colliery conducted by the popular Listen to the Band host, who will be joined on stage by the voice of BBC Radio 2's weekday morning show, Ken Bruce.
The audience in Salford will also be able to hear previous winners, Katrina Marzella and Brendan Wheeler in a duet.
In the footsteps
The winner of the award, which is now in its tenth year, will follow in the footsteps of the likes of Stephen Sykes, Lewis Musson, Ben Thomson, Matthew White and Josiah Walters as well as it's first two winners, Katrina and Brendan.

Prize
The award winner will take home the special trophy, be offered a further broadcast opportunity with a performance at the European Festival of Brass Gala Concert in Perth on Saturday May 3rd, and will be the featured artist in a future edition of ‘Listen to the Band’.
