Blidworth welcomes Dyke troms and new principal

A community trombone day led by Black Dyke stars proves to be a huge success as Blidworth Band also adds a new principal cornet to their ranks.

Black Dyke troms

Last weekend the fourth annual Community Trombone Day took place in Mansfield led by Brett Baker and the members of the Black Dyke Trombone Quartet (above).

Delegates from all over the Midlands came together for a full day of workshop activities as well as enjoy performances by the Youth and Junior Black Dyke Trombone Ensembles.

Largest number

Organiser Martin Heartfield told 4BR: "This year saw the largest number of delegates attending and the event seems to be growing each year with sponsors already secured for 2017."

Following the event Brett Baker was joined by Paul Woodward to perform with the Blidworth Welfare Band in a special fundraising concert. The audience enjoyed pieces from the band as well as solos and duets by Paul and Brett and the Youth and Junior Trombone Ensembles.

New principal

Meanwhile, the band has also announced the signing of Neil Escott as their new principal cornet player in advance of their appearance at the National Finals in Cheltenham in September and their subsequent promotion to the Championship Section in January next year.

Excellent player

A spokesperson told 4BR: "Neil Escott is an excellent, experienced player and a welcome addition to strengthen the band.

He joins us from Shirebrook and has previously been at Newstead Brass as well as other Midlands bands. We look forward to working with Neil as we prepare for upcoming contests and concerts."
