Thoresby aim to reach new heights

The Thoresby Band will be looking to stay at the summit of top class banding thanks to the hiking determination of their players.

Thoresby cheque

Despite the news of the imminent closure of the colliery which has offered great support to the top flight band that bears their name, the Thoresby Band has already started to look to secure their financial future by literally reaching new heights.

Competitive

Determined band members and are now on the fundraising trail to enable them to remain a highly competitive force in the Championship Section and to keep the tradition of colliery banding alive in the East Midlands region.

Altitude Brass

Next month will see intrepid a number of them tackle the heights of Mount Snowden in North Wales — with their aptly named 'Altitude Brass' fund raising project.

The players hope to hike to the summit with instruments in hand, where they will play a short concert for the pleasure of the other climbers. It is hoped that every player will be sponsored in order to bring in much needed funding.

As a band that receives no formal sponsorship we rely on donations and concert revenue, so need to use innovative approaches to raise funds to keep scaling the contesting heights — and this does just that!Claire Taylor

Innovative

Principal cornet Claire Taylor told 4BR: "We are very excited about this daunting challenge and looking forward to it.
