Yorkshire youngsters ready for Dyke Festival challenge

The talented young players of the Yorkshire Youth Band are more than ready for their appearance at the forthcoming Black Dyke Festival.

There was an air of excitement and enthusiasm coursing through the veins of the young players of the Yorkshire Youth Band recently, as they met up for their first gathering of 2014 at the Robert Wilkinson School near York.

Festival appearance

Under the expert leadership of Director of Music Dr Nicholas Childs, the band was starting its preparation for its participation in the Black Dyke Brass Festival supported by Besson Musical Instruments, on 23rd March in Leeds Town Hall.

Assisted by star players Richard Marshall, John O’Brien, Gary Curtin, Brett Baker, Jonny Bates, Zoe Hancock, Matthew Routley and Adie Smith, the youngsters were put through their musical paces, with the MD declaring himself delighted at the progress made.

Keen to learn

"There is a great deal of musical talent in the band and with everyone so keen to learn and improve, it’s a delight to bring down the baton. The current players are determined to make a real mark at the Black Dyke Festival once again," Dr Child said.

Great turn out

Black Dyke principal cornet player Richard Marshall agreed: “There was a great turn out with some fantastic music played, including Jonny Bates’ ‘Old London Town’ and Dan Price’s ‘Blue Thunder’.

It’s great for the Black Dyke players to work with such enthusiastic players. The stage may not be big enough to get all 200 of us on it this year, so I may have to find a place to squeeze in on the end!"

One band member, Ruth Mellor of Tewit Youth Band told 4BR: "I’ve been looking forward to the rehearsal and counting the days down since Christmas. I can’t wait to share the stage with Black Dyke."
