Childs wows New York

David Childs made a huge impression in the Big Apple last weekend with his appearance at Carnegie Hall.

Last weekend in New York, euphonium star David Childs appreared as a guest soloist at the iconic Carnegie Hall Isaac Stern Auditorium as part of the ‘Music Masters of Wales’ concert.

The performance coincided with Wales Week USA, and was presented in association with the Welsh Assembly Government.

Jenkins

The evening began with Welsh composer Karl Jenkins conducting three of his own works, including the US premiere of his ‘Euphonium Concerto’, as well as the New York premiere of Arwel Hughes' 'Dewi Sant', both led by DCINY Principal Conductor, Dr. Jonathan Griffith.

Honour

David told 4BR: "To play in one of the world's most prestigious auditoriums was truly an honour, but to receive a standing ovation having performed a Concerto composed for me, accompanied by the superb DCINY orchestra, conducted by Karl Jenkins, with my family in the auditorium supporting me.... that was more than special, it was like living a dream!"

Critics

The critics were out in force, and were suitably impressed by the Cory euphonium payer, whith Iris Derke, the General Director of the renowned Distinguished Concerts International organisation, hoping to book him up as soon as possible for a return visit:

She told 4BR: "We at DCINY would like to congratulate David. We look forward to words of his future success and to welcoming him on the DCINY Concert Series whenever he wishes to return."

It was truly wonderful to see a critical New York audience give Dave the standing ovation he rightly deservedAaron van der Weele

Thrill

American euphonium star Aaron van der Weele was also deeply impressed by what he heard: "What a thrill it was to hear David again. I found myself just as inspired and in awe of his world class talent as the sea of young tuba and euphonium students that surrounded me in the hall."

He added: "He is a consummate musical communicator who effortlessly manoeuvred through the various moods of the music, from the insane acrobatics of his technique to the delicate and even flirtatious mood of the tango. It was truly wonderful to see a critical New York audience give Dave the standing ovation he rightly deserved."

Virtuoso

American euphonium artist Jason Ham, added: "The New York audience was mesmerized by David's playing, and enthusiastically recognized his presentation as a true virtuoso of the instrument."

Bowled over

The final word though went to the event organiser, who was absolutely bowled over by the performer: "Not only was it a pleasure, it was a genuine treat to have David share his unbelievable talents with DCINY and the lucky concert goers who attended Saturday night's concert at Carnegie Hall."

Artistry

They added: "With David’s artistry and sheer dexterity the euphonium has now garnered a top slot in the concerto world. With Dr. Jenkins at the podium David played well the role of showman and technician, exhibiting rips, roars and runs one never knew that this lyrical instrument was capable of, and all done with ease and a wonderful and engaging stage presence.

"Karl Jenkins has written a stunning work for this fine instrument that with David’s talents will most certainly reach new audiences and shine a spotlight on them both."
