Riki McDonnell wins the 2010 New Zealand Champion of Champions

Twenty one musicians lined last night, across two events, for the honour of being crowned the 2010 New Zealand Champion of Champions.

Junior Champion of Champions

1. Kyle Lawson
2. Mitchell Spence
3. Luke Spence

The three adjudicators, Kevin Dell, Mark Oldershaw and Shane Foster, were unanimous in choosing the top three. Kyle Lawson played a mature performance of La Belle Americane with training provided by Kevin Jarrett.

Riki McDonnell performed Harlequin (Philip Sparke) and took the Errol Mason Trophy home for the first time in 15 years.

The adjudicators for the Open Champion of Champions were Barrie Gott, Dave Gallaher, and Tony Lewis.

Administrator of the Year

Prior to the announcement of the winners the Administrator of the Year was awarded to Jennifer Carey of Dalewool Auckland Brass (accepted by her husband Murray as she could not travel to Dunedin) for her hours of work for her band over many years.

Accompanist of the Year

The Accompanist of the Year was nominated by Ascot Park Hotel Invercargill Brass for Christchurch pianist Beverley Kench who assisted over 25 both the senior and auxiliary band soloists in the District contest at short notice in 2009.
