Back of the net!

An innovative course in understanding performance anxieties could well lead to better players — and footballers....

Concord

It won’t just be superstar English footballers who will hopefully benefit from expert psychology to put a World Cup football into the back of a penalty shootout net in Brazil in a few weeks time.

Performance anxiety

That’s because leading professional trumpet player Paul Archibald has teamed up Andy Evans, one of the UK's top performance psychologists, to talk and explore strategies to manage performance anxiety, a subject close to the heart of many musicians — and brass band players in particular.

The duo will be running a course at Putney High School in London on Sunday 8th June, where musicians of all levels and abilities can join a day designed to explore and understand managing performance anxiety.

Better musician

Paul told 4BR that he felt that understanding performance anxieties is key to becoming a better musician.

"Andy's philosophy is based on helping musicians to understand negative feelings, develop regimes that will improve performance and manage anxieties. Just like English footballers — the benefits will hopefully lead to long term success!"

Acclaimed

Andy Evans (BA, MA, CPCC) is a psychologist, performance coach, writer and musician.

He has been a UK pioneer of performance psychology, and is a frequent broadcaster and magazine contributor on showbiz and general arts and media subjects.

The latest of his five books, ‘Secrets of Performing Confidence’ has been critically and academically acclaimed.

No pressure

Paul added: "The course will be held in a comfortable and safe environment with absolutely no intimidation or pressure — just practical help and an enjoyable time.

It costs £65, but is open to anyone who wishes to attend — from performers, actors and musicians to any passing footballer!

It’s the culmination of a weekend of musical activities at Putney High School and all musicians are welcome to join us."
