One of Welsh banding's brightest young artistic talents has shown a different side to her title winning character by claiming the prestigious Drama Medal at the 2015 Urdd National Eisteddfod.

It is the latest in a long line of drama awards for Ffion Williams (pictured above behind banner), who is a scholar at Jesus College, Oxford, and a multi-instrumental member of the Goodwick Band in West Wales since her early school days — playing soprano, cornet and flugel horn.

Drama winner

Ffion is currently studying for a master's degree in Celtic Studies, after graduating last year with a first class honours degree from Bangor University.

She has already won the Drama Medal at the Intercollegiate Eisteddfod and the Welsh Young Farmer's Society chair three times, in addtion to the Welsh League, Welsh Area and National Championship titles with Goodwick. All this and she has also been a member of the National Youth Band of Wales and the European Youth Band.

No only does Ffion hope to carry in her brass banding, but also plans to study for a doctorate in Welsh, before staring a career in the theatre or the arts.

One act play

The Drama Medal is awarded for writing a one-act stage play taking no more than 40 — 60 minutes to perform. Ffion competed under the nom de plume 'Liszt' with a piece of work called 'Libersträume', which examines the relationship between a piano teacher and his pupil.

Deserved

According to the adjudicators, Elen Bowman and Dafydd James, Ffion is a "mature, theatrical dramatist who understands the craft"and who "fully deserves the Medal in a strong competition."
