Webster returns to Grimethorpe on principal cornet

Prof Roger Webster has returned to Grimethorpe Colliery Band on principal cornet as Dr Robert Childs aims to claim British Open title after Australian tour success.

Almost as soon as they have touched down from their hugely successful tour to Australia, Grimethorpe Colliery Band has shocked the banding world with the announcement that Prof Roger Webster will return to the band as principal cornet with immediate effect.

British Open

It has been confirmed to 4BR that the renowned Besson international artist will be leading the Brass in Concert champion as they look to claim their first British Open success since 1991 at Symphony Hall on 'Reflections of Swan Lake' by Stephen Roberts.

Best in the business

Commenting on the appointment Director of Music, Dr Robert Childs told 4BR: "In my opinion Roger is the best cornet player in the business, and I'm so pleased he has accepted my invitation to rejoin Grimethorpe Colliery Band.

Roger has Grimethorpe in his blood and is simply returning to his roots. This is a huge boost to the band and immediately builds on the amazing success we enjoyed on our tour to Australia."

Culross thanks

He added: "I would like to thank Iain Culross for his super playing over the past 18 months and especially for his outstanding playing in Australia. I wish him all the best in the future."

Unique connection

A clearly enthused Roger Webster also told 4BR of his delight at returning to a band that has a unique connection with him.

"I'm excited about returning to the end chair at Grimethorpe under the baton of Bob.

We've worked together many times over the years, and share the same passion and drive for musical excellence.

Grimethorpe has always had a very special connection with me throughout my banding career and I hope I can help steer them to even great success in the future."

Joining Roger on the front row will be Chris Turner, Greg Timmins and Craig Kilgour.
