Moved by Art seeks old for new

An innovative project supported by Brass Bands England seeks to bring high quality artwork and performance to the heart of Yorkshire.

Barnsley-based arts initiative 'Moved by Art' has been awarded £44,651 through the Arts Council's 'Grants for the Arts' for their project 'Moved by Art Brass ReMade'.

In a celebration of the 20th Anniversary of 'Brassed Off!' new partnerships in Barnsley are working together, including Brass Bands England, Barnsley Brass and all four South Yorkshire Music Hubs.

Artwork and performance

Created in collaboration with the Music Education Hubs, the project will focus on the appreciation, engagement, exploration, collaboration and creation of high quality brass-related artwork and performance, inspired by exhibitions curated by the Gallery @ The Civic in Barnsley.

Creative experts including award-winning composers Lucy Pankhurst and Jonathan Bates will deliver a series of workshops to design and create a unique score, new instruments and poetry inspired by this Autumn's displays.

Perpetual canon

These will include Cornelia Parker's beautiful 'Perpetual Canon' — made from silver-plated flattened brass instruments, as well as Jeremy Deller's 'The History of the World', on loan from The Tate, which played an integral to the development of Fairey's renowned Acid Brass.

Parker also created the equally stunning 'Breathless' (above) which hangs at the V&A in London.

In the first stage of developing the project, 'Moved by Art' will collect damaged or broken instruments to be 'ReMade'. Instrument maker Paul Jeffries will then work with groups of young people to turn them into usable musical instruments, creating new music and poetry with performance poet James Nash.

Performance

To connect with the region's rich history in brass and coal, the main performance will take place at a derelict pithead site just outside Barnsley's town centre.

This will celebrate both traditional and contemporary aspects of brass music featuring Barnsley Brass. Additional performances will also take place at local events in Doncaster, Sheffield and Rotherham.

These will include Cornelia Parker's beautiful 'Perpetual Canon' — made from silver-plated flattened brass instruments, as well as Jeremy Deller's 'The History of the World', on loan from The Tate4BR

Instruments

To enable this project to happen, the 'Moved by Art' Team urgently need as many donated brass instruments as possible!
