Black Dyke has announced the success of their first Arts Award students.

Working in partnership with the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band, the Arts Award forms part of an extensive education initiative by the Queensbury band, including the delivering of qualifications through collaboration with the five West Yorkshire music hubs.

The initiative is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Bronze qualification

16 members of the Yorkshire Youth Brass Band have now completed their Arts Award 'Bronze Qualification' and will be presented with their certificates at Black Dyke's forthcoming Christmas concerts in Dewsbury and Huddersfield Town Halls.

A number of Black Dyke Band members have also trained as Arts Award Advisors and commenced working with the first set of young trainees in April.

Wonderful opportunity

Cornet player John O'Brien stated: "This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to gain a nationally recognised qualification whilst enjoying their hobby of playing an instrument."

Black Dyke Director of Music Prof Nicholas Childs added: "This scheme offers a wonderful opportunity for young people to gain tangible reward for their efforts and dedication."
