Doyle hopes to inspire knockout blow with Chip Butty

John Doyle and friends hope to inspire boxer Kell Brook to victory tonight in his World Championship fight with a rendition of a very special Sheffield football song...

Chip Butty
A football song about a greasy chip butty is the musical inspiration for John Doyle and friends in Sheffield

Leyland Band's soprano cornet star John Doyle has undertaken many different types of gigs in his playing career — but none on the scale as the one he will be doing later tonight in Sheffield with colleagues Brian Heyes and Ben Dixon.

The trio have been asked to provide the musical introduction to the ring entrance of IBF world welterweight champion Kell Brook for his fight against the unbeaten American Errol Spence Jr at Bramall Lane — the home of Sheffield United Football Club.

4.8 MIillion

Not only will there be 27,000 boxing supporters all yelling at the top of their voice at around 10.30pm, but an estimated 4.8 million people watching at home, with the lads generating even more fervent excitement with a rendition of 'The Greasy Chip Butty Song' — Sheffield United's fans anthem.

"I've done most things with my playing, but this is a first,"John said. "Kell Brook is a Sheffield United fan so it's no surprise he wants to get the home fans singing at the top their voice. The request came out of the blue and only today we were told that we will be broadcast live on Sky — so no pressure then to get it right!"

We just hope it also fires Kell up for a knock-out win. It would be nice to play it again for him at a title defence in Las Vegas or Madison Square Gardens!John Doyle

Las Vegas

He added: "We just hope it also fires Kell up for a knock-out win. It would be nice to play it again for him at a title defence in Las Vegas or Madison Square Gardens!"

The provenance of the 'Chip Butty' song, sung to the tune of John Denver's 'Annie's Song' is unknown, but its origin is claimed by Sheffield United supporters after a game in 1985.
