Oenkerk From Amsterdam!

De Bazuin Oenkerk are crowned 2001 Dutch Champions.

Oenkerk From Amsterdam.

Brass Band De Bazuin—Oenkerk conducted by Klass van der Woude are the 2001 Dutch National Champions following their win at the weekend in Amsterdam. Theirs was the highlight of a contest that featured no less than 40 bands.

After giving a fine overall performance of Jan Van de Roost’s set test, “Albion” the win sets the band up to represent their country at the forthcoming European Championships in Brussels in 2002.
Second place went to Provinciale Brass Band Groningen conducted by Siemen Hoekstra whilst third spot went to Brass Band Schoonhoven directed by Benny Wiame.

De Bazuin—Oenkerk were drawn 4th out of the 6 bands in the Championship Section and gave a top class performance of the set test that just did enough to edge out Groningen by a point, who earlier had set the high standard for the day off the number 1 draw. Fourth place went to last years champions De Waldsang.

The adjudicators for the top section were Goff Richards, Jacob Slagter and Thomas Wyss. All three were in charge of deliberations in the First Section as well.

De Bazuin will be hoping that their latest success will rub off when they represent their country at the European Championships where they will hope to improve on last years result, where they came a disappointing 9th overall. A repeat of their second place in 1999 would be something that they would be looking to emulate.

Meanwhile the First Section title was won by Amsterdam Brass conducted by Frank van Kooten who won by a point from Brass Band Merum—Roermond with Kunst naar Kracht—De Goorn in third spot. The Second Section prize was won by Excelsior—Ferwerd directed by Piet Visser who won by three points from Pro Rege A—Heerenveen and Martini Brass Band—Groningen.

The Third Section title was taken by Koperensemble Muziekschool De Waldsang—Buitenpost from De Nije Bazun—Britsum with Juliana—Kollumerzwaag in third spot. The Fourth Section title was won by Apollo—Grou directed by Piet Visser (who had success in winning the Second Section and directed the runners up in the Third section) from Bernlef—Noordbergum in second and Excelsior—Driesum/Wouterswoude in third.

The adjudicators for the lower sections were Durk Lautenbach, Marcus Bach and Jan Van de Roost (who somewhat strangely was not in the box for the Championship section). Initial reports to us at 4BR suggest that once again both players and audience liked the top section set test, and the overall standard of playing was up especially in the lower sections. It looks like the Dutch will be putting up a strong challenge for the European title as well.
