Star departures announced from YBS

Morgan Griffiths has announced he is to leave the European and Open winners. Could others follow?

Morgan Takes a Break

After ten years of top class playing with Yorkshire Building Society, Morgan Griffiths has announced exclusively to 4BR that he’s decided to leave the band.

The star euphonium player revealed to 4BR that after a decade of non stop banding at the highest level he needed a bit of a rest before deciding what to do next. “I’ve decided to leave YBS now as after ten years I feel I need the stimulus of a new challenge and a bit of time to relax and enjoy myself.”

He did however make the point that he has certainly not ruled out a quick return to banding in the New Year in new a uniform. “ I’m going to take my time before making a decision about what and where I go next, but I’m certainly not ruling out playing with another band—I enjoy it too much.”

Morgan was also adamant that the parting from YBS was done in a perfectly amicable way and that he wished to point out that he is extremely grateful to David King, who he has had a close and fruitful working relationship ship over the last decade.

“David King has been an immense inspiration to me over the years and I can’t thank him enough for what he has helped me achieve as a player. I’m sure he will be able to groom a player to take over from me and I’m sure the band will continue to be a major contesting force in the country for many years to come.”

Morgan Griffiths returned to YBS after a short spell under David King at Black Dyke and over the next decade he played a major role in helping the band secure 5 European titles, 3 British Open titles, 2 Area titles and 2 All England Masters wins. In addition he was awarded the title of Euphonium Player of the Year in 1998.

He has had many highlights with the band but commented that two stood out. “The win at the British Open in 1999 on “Dove Descending…” was special because it was so hard a euphonium part to play, whilst for the band as a whole the win at the European this year was a justifiable reward, especially as we felt so hard done by a few years back in Kerkrade.”

Morgans last job with the band will take place this Sunday at Whitely Bay and then he’s going to enjoy a short break with his family over Christmas before deciding on his next step.

4BR can also reveal that John Davies the Principal Eb Bass has decided to leave and will be joining forces with Grimethorpe Colliery, whilst David Clegg, the bands long serving 2nd horn player will also be leaving the band after Sunday’s concert. Other rumours are also flying around at the moment but at present it seems some of the stalwart players at YBS over the past decade have decided that it could be a time for a change.
