Pritchard separates from Lancashire Pair

Gareth Pritchard has announced he has left both Besses O' th Barn and Glossop Old bands.


Pritchard Leaves Besses and Glossop

The conductor Gareth Pritchard has informed 4BR that he has taken the decision to leave both Besses O’th’ Barn and Glossop Old bands.

Gareth told 4BR that under the differing set of circumstances that he continued to work under at both bands he felt that his decision to leave was both appropriate and correct. “The ending of the professional arrangement at Besses was appropriate for both parties” he said. “I felt that there was an immediate need to change certain musical matters if the band was to progress and to that end I proposed a number of different options. These weren’t taken by the band and so the only course of action was to relinquish my position with them.”

“I felt that there was a real basis for further improvement within the band, but there was a difference in the way in which both parties felt this should be addressed. Therefore we have parted company.”

2001 has seen Besses perform with varying degrees of success under Gareth Pritchard’s direction, although there were signs in many performances that the basis of substantive progress was being made. The band started the year by coming 8th at Yeovil under resident conductor Steve Beardmore before Gareth Pritchard took them into 6th place at the Regionals, 10th place at the All England Masters and 11th at the Grand Shield, whilst later in the year they came 15th at Pontins and last of the 11 bands at Spennymoor.

Gareth Pritchard also informed us that he has also left Glossop Old band, but for very different reasons. “I’ve had a wonderful time with Glossop and they are some of the nicest people you would ever like to meet. They do have problems with playing strength at the moment and so it was mutually agreed that it would be better if they concentrated on addressing that as a priority matter. I understand Jim Cant has returned to the band and I’m sure he will be able to attract the players they require to continue to be successful. I wish them all the very best.”

Under him the band came 18th at this years Pontins Championship.

Finally he revealed that the departures will not mean that he will be away from top class banding for too long and that he hopes to make some sort of announcement concerning a full time appointment in the banding world in the very near future.
