Fairey's Foil Fodens Four in a Row

Williams Fairey under the inspired baton of Howard Snell win the North West Area crown with a brilliant performance of Jazz.

Williams Fairey and Howard Snell are the 2001 North West Area Champions after giving the audience at the Winter Gardens Blackpoll an absolutely stunning account of Philip Wilby's Jazz.

Playing off the number 8 draw, and last but one band on stage, Fairey gave a performance that had adjudicator Malcolm Brownbill reaching for the superlatives.

The 194pts and two point winning margin was universally greeted with agreement by the audience, all of whom heard Howard Snell's new band give a very definitive account of the test piece.

Second were a slightly downcast Fodens Courtois, who couldn't quite give enough to secure a fourth consecutive winning performance, but still did enough to push Fairey's all the way.

Leyland and Garry Cutt came third and secured their place at the Royal Albert Hall with a fine account that featured some stunning playing from Andy King their 16 year old solo trombone. Many in the audience had them placed above Fodens, but on this occassion they surely will be pleased to qualify yet again for the Finals.
