CWS sign up Young Musician of the Year

CWS Glasgow have announced that Adrian Spillett, the 1998 BBC Young Musician of the Year will play with the band at this years Europeans.

CWS Glasgow have announced that they are in the process of signing Young Musician of the Year 1998, Adrian Spillett, the brilliant percussionist to play with the band at the Europeans. In addition they will hopefully be completing the signing of Jonathon Webster, the Managing Director of Fred Rhodes Ltd, on solo baritone as well.

Commenting on the coup, Euan Miller, Band Manager of CWS said, “The music for the Europeans requires top class percussionists and so we felt we had to go out and sign the best. Adrian is a quite phenomenal player who is delighted to help us out. Having him with us will be a real boost.”

CWS will also be hopefully completing the signing of Jonathon Webster in the next few days to fill the solo baritone position. “We also needed a top class baritone for the contest and Nicholas Childs had no hesitation in recommending Jonathon Webster. He’s seen it and done it all—so he’ll be a real asset to the band.”

As to the selection for the Own Choice section of the contest, the band has plumbed for “Harrison’s Dream” by Peter Graham, the test piece for last years National Finals. “It’s a great piece and one we think we can do well on. Nick took us on it at the Finals where we came sixth off the number one draw, so we know we can do well on it.”

With the line up complete, CWS Glasgow should be in the position to strongly challenge for the European title. “We hope so. With players such as David Childs, Hedley Benson and now Adrian Spillett and Jonathon Webster in the line up, we think this could be our best chance yet.”

Euan Miller also wanted to thank the Newtongrange Band for the lend of percussion equipment and two percussionists at the Scottish Championships. “We were two percussionists down due to illness and so they helped us out on stage quite brilliantly, and as we had an accident on the way to the contest we had to borrow some equipment off them as well. We can’t thank them enough.”

“A side door on the band bus had spung open on the M8 motorway and percussion equipment was left all over the road. We had to get the Police involved in clearing up the mess, which meant we missed our scheduled rehearsal. As we were two percussionists down and a solo cornet player light we felt it may not be our day! Luckily the band played very well and we managed to get the win we thought we deserved.”
