Morrison for Brighouse?

"Payneful" departure at Brighouse as Morrison could be the next man as Top Man.

Following the news that Brighouse and Rastrick have “parted company” with Principal Cornet player Nick Payne, runours are flying around the banding ether that it could signal a return to Yorkshire banding for Alan Morrison, who just a few weeks ago announced his resignation from the Travelsphere Band in the Midlands.

There has been no official reason as yet from Brighouse to state the reasons behind their decision and Nick Payne has been quoted as being exceptionally disappointed at the news. He was made top man at the band following the departure of the tempestuous talent that was Graeme McCulloch who left the band for a second time before the 2001 All England Masters. Nick Payne stepped into his shoes with some aplomb and at the contest on “Pageantry” played a fulcrum role with Philip McCann in winning the band the title. He has also won many admirers in the past year for his performances with the band at both the British Open, All England Masters and latterly the National Finals where he lead the band when they came a very creditable 6th place off the number one spot.

Alan Morrison meanwhile has long been regarded as one of the premier cornet players of his generation and can boast a record of achievement second to none—including being Principal Cornet of Grimethorpe Colliery Band during their wins at the British Open and National Finals in the early 1990’s. He has also won the award as “Best Principal Cornet” at the Spennymoor Brass in Concert Championships on no less than 6 occasions (including 5 years in a row) and was “Best Soloist” there on three occasions.

The betting has been closed on any other rival player being headhunted for the job and it seems that the former Grimey top man will be making the short trip from his home on Leeds to Brighouse in the New Year.
