From Smithills To The Philharmonia!

4BR Lower Section Band of the Year have been at it again!

When the annual Christmas Eve Smithills School Senior Brass Band Concert ends at approximately 10pm, a concert which has become a sell-out tradition over the past decade for Smithills, conductor Chris Wormald has just Christmas Day and Boxing Day at home before travelling to London to play in the horn section of the Philharmonia Orchestra for Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the Barbican!

Having been a freelance horn player since first playing professionally in 1981, Chris succeeded the legendary Gordon Higginbottom at James Shepherd Versatile Brass on French Horn some 14 years ago. On leaving the group the same night as both Jim Shepherd and Tuba soloist Colin Aspinall 4 years later, Chris was succeeded by one of his former pupils, Jeremy Ainsworth, who remains with VB to this day. However, Sunday December 28th will be Chris’s first appearance at the Barbican with a major London orchestra.

The first half of the Philharmonia concert will feature Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.5 (Emperor) with soloist Asley Wass when the two horns will be Chris Wormald and Mark Almond of the Philhamonia (another former pupil of his whom he taught from the age of 9 to 19 and who is now Co-Principal at the Philharmonia) and the horn section for the second half of the concert will also include the great Hugh Seenan who can be heard on every major film soundtrack to have been recorded in London for the last twenty years. The Barbican concert also features the London Philharmonic Choir and the Royal Choral Society and will be conducted by David Parry.
