Alan Widdop and Marsden part company.

Partnership ends after 12 fine years.


After a fruitful 12 year partnership, Alan Widdop has resigned as Musical Director of Marsden Silver Band. Alan, who for many years played with the Black Dyke Mills Band and the James Shepherd Versatile Brass, started as MD with Marsden in 1991.

Dave Ashworth, on behalf of 4BarsRest, spoke at length with Alan and asked him about his time at Marsden?

‘I have been with Marsden for 12 to 13yrs’ said Alan, ‘We started at the bottom of the 3rd section. A lot of hard work was needed moving through the 3rd section and then up into the 2nd. At this time most of the players were still the original team. Winning the 2nd section took us up to the 1st and 3 good results, in the 1st section, took us up to the Championship Section. In order to stay in the Championship Section the team needed to work very hard and I think that this might have been a big step too soon’.

We asked him, what he thought was the important element to his success?

Alan replied, ‘The most important thing is to work on sound. Sound was the main thing, no sound, no results. Results will not happen without hard work and I expect any band to work very hard to get to their best potential. Most of all players must want to do it and most important they must enjoy what they are doing.’

What about your future?

Alan replied, ‘I always want a challenge and therefore I need to find something more demanding of my talents. 12 years is a long time with any band and I have made many friends who I sure I will keep. But my challenge now is to get a band, who are willing to learn and want to achieve. I believe that a lot of MD’s don’t teach enough. All they want to do is stand in the middle and look good and hope for the best’.

Under Alan, Marsden have achieved some marvellous contest result, to many to list but one of the most prestigious must be the last 3 years at Delph, at the Whit Friday Contest. 1st overall in 2001, 1st overall in 2002 and 2nd overall in 2003, stopped from winning the hat trick by ½ point, when they were beaten by Black Dyke this year. This is a fantastic achievement in itself.

March 18 • Bradwell Silver strikes gold to take Fourth Section title and head to Cheltenham alongside Regent Community Brass and Great Yarmouth Brass.

March 18 • NASUWT Riverside makes it a North of England Area double as they head back to the Albert Hall as champions again with Reg Vardy in tow.
