Young Conductor Competition 2004

Steven Tan wins London and South heat in the latest heat to find the best young brass band conductor in the land.

The final heat (London & South) of the Young Conductor Competition was held on Saturday 6th December 2003.

The result of the London & South heat held at Swindon Pegasus Band was:

Winner—Steven Tan
Runner-Up—Justin Gooch

The adjudicators were Dr Roy Newsome and Geoffrey Brand.

Steven Tan is studying at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall. Steven is in his third year of the Bandmaster Course and, on completion, will be returning to Singapore to rejoin the Singapore Armed Forces Bands.

The Runner Up, Justin Gooch is also in his third year of the Bandmaster’s course at the Royal Military School of Music.

Special mention must be made of the Swindon Pegasus Band who stepped in at a very late stage. The band had been at an engagement in Bristol Friday evening and had another concert commitment on Sunday in Coventry. The NABBC are most grateful that they managed to give of their time so generously in the midst of such a busy schedule.

The winner of the heat received a cheque for £100 and will receive an invitation to attend the National Final of the competition that is to be held in Loughborough on the 21st February 2004 during the NABBC’s Annual Convention.

Please contact Ted Howard, National Secretary, NABBC for any further information ( or 07968 296771).
