New Colliers March on

Derek Broadbent commemorates the miners with new march.


After attending a seminar given by the Coalfields Regeneration Trust Derek Atkinson, secretary of the North West Counties Brass Bands Association arranged a meeting with the North West Fund Officer to talk over events that his Association had planned for 2004. The outcome of this meeting was agreement that the Association commission a Contest March funded by the Trust.

The Coalfield Regeneration Trust is an independent grant-making organization. It is a registered Charity and Company limited by guarantee governed by a Board of Trustees. The Trust, although independent of the Government, forms part of the Government Response to the recommendations in the Coalfields Task Force Report in England.

A call was made to Derek Broadbent to see if he was available to compose the march and David Horsfield of Kirklees Music was ask advice on publishing.

Costings were made and the total Grant from the Trust was agreed.

On Tuesday the 9th of December the two Derek’s and Lionel Peel (NWCBBA Ex.Officer) arrived at Wingates bandroom with the new march.

Wingates had kindly agreed to ‘Dry-run’ the March to be called ‘The Colliers’ in memory of all who served in the Coalfields, and Derek conducted the first playing of his new march.

All who attended the rehearsal was pleased with the end result and Derek A agreed that choosing Derek B was indeed the right move.

The March is now with David at Kirklees and will be printed in time for its first public performance at the end of Brass at the Guild, Guild Hall, Preston, 8th February 2004 played by Wingates and conducted, if he is free, by Derek himself.

All Association Bands will receive a copy of the March and it is hoped that any Band having or had links with the Coalfields will also receive a free copy.
