Euro soloist to star with Groningen

Star tuba player Øystein Baadsvik to feature with Dutch Champions.


Øystein Baadsvik the impressive tuba player from Trondheim Norway is to appear as guest soloist with the Provinciale Brassband Groningen, conducted by Siemen Hoekstra.
Øystein has made a favorable impression to the audience at the Gala Concert of the European Brassband Championships last May in Bergen.

Øystein, sponsored by the German company Miraphone, visits the Netherlands from the 13th of January until the January 18th, and he is giving some Masterclasses. Finally of his visit he’s playing at the New Year Concert of Brass Band Groningen, Saturday January 17th in the Cultureel Centrum ‘t Kielzog in Hoogezand.

Øystein Baadsvik started playing the tuba at the age of fifteen. He soon decided to explore the tuba’s possibilities as a solo instrument, and at the age of eighteen won 1.st prize in a Norwegian national competition for soloists. Within the space of two years he had made his own programs for Norwegian Radio and had been a soloist with most of Norway’s professional symphony orchestras.

Øystein Baadsvik studied under Michael Lind, Roger Bobo, John Fletcher, Arnold Jacobs and Harvey Phillips.

His international career began with two prizes at the prestigious Concours International d’Exécution Musicale (CIEM) in Geneva in 1991. Shortly after that his first solo CD was released. It received excellent reviews in international music magazines all over the world. American Record Guide says: "This spectacular recording establishes Baadsvik as one of the best tuba soloists in the world."

Today he is in great demand as a soloist and lecturer all over the world, and he is unique in being a full-time tuba soloist. He works constantly to expand the musical aspects of the tuba and, as well as performing solo repertoire for tuba and orchestra, he collaborates with jazz, rock and pop musicians. In all these genres, his desire to communicate with his audience has always been his guiding principle. In consequence, he has also developed new tuba-playing techniques that have been used in a number of more recent works for the instrument. In 1999 Øystein Baadsvik was granted a two-year scholarship by the Norwegian state to continue his work in this respect.
Øystein Baadsvik has premiered some thirty solo works by composers from the USA, Russia, Sweden, Norway and Switzerland. He also composes music himself, and conducts many of his own orchestral concerts.

His latest CD, 'Tuba Carnival' for tuba and strings, was released in 40 countries september 2003 on the BIS label. Due to the success of this recording, the first edition of 1500 CD's was sold out in 6 days, Baadsvik has been offered an exclusive recording contract with BIS.

Øystein is i.a. performing at the concert against with the Provinciale Brass Band Groningen, Norwegian Dance no. 1, Winter from Vivaldi, Gabriels Oboe, and one of his most enjoyable and fine pieces of music Fnugg composed by himself.
