Big prizes up for grabs by Morecambe

Lancashire Life Morecambe launch celebratory composition competition. £1000 is up for grabs so get your pens out. We have the details.

January 2004 sees the start of the Centenary Year for Lancashire Life Morecambe Band, and to celebrate this milestone in the Bands History they are launching a major National Competition for a new Brass Band composition in conjunction with the PRS Foundation

First prize of £1000
Runner up prize £250

The Band is looking to extend the typical brass band concert repertoire with a new and original composition at Section 2 level. It will have to meet a high standard if it is to impress the panel of Judges and then subsequently be the agreed best piece as voted by our Concert audience at Morecambe Dome on Saturday July 10th.

Consultations with a respected publisher of Brass Band Music here in the North has indicated a lack of good original concert music of 6-9 minutes duration. There are plenty of Marches, an abundance of arrangements from Lloyd Webber to Bach, plenty of Overtures and Test Pieces but a lack of good pieces to open or close a programme; this will be the target area.

The Band has already a terrific following in the district, concerts are often sold out and a new original piece celebrating such a distinguished landmark in the Band’s history would be very well received.

Preparing the two short listed pieces will give the Band (many of whom are young players) plenty to think about, since often modern Brass Band Music has frequent time changes and an increasing role for the percussion players. All good fun!

David Horsfield of Kirklees Music has stated that should the winning pieces meet their required standards then they would be prepared both for publication.
