Newstead’s Festive Season of Note

Newstead Welfare complete their festive season in fine style.

Nottinghamshire’s Newstead Welfare Band and Newstead Youth Band completed their Christmas programme last Saturday playing to a near capacity audience at St Mary’s Parish Church in Hucknall, burial place of the poet Lord Byron who lived at Newstead Abbey.

This followed on from a Christmas Concert at Nuthall Methodist Church (supported by Giltbrook Electrical Distributors) that also attracted a near full house.

The events marked another major step forward for the Newstead Youth Band (Paul Whyley) as they performed the entire first half of each concert unaided, rather than being limited to a 20 minute ‘spot’ as has previously been the case.

In the second half Newstead Welfare Band (Duncan Beckley) provided a festive selection and entertainment before the two bands combined for a rousing finale of Leroy Anderson’s ‘Sleighride’ and Derek Ashmore’s ‘Jingle Bells’.

The concerts followed on from the appearance of both bands in the Manchester open on November 28th when Newstead’s performance of ‘Paganini Variations’ took second place in a twelve strong ‘Championship Grade’ and also won the special award for the best bass section and the Newstead Youth Band made their debut in section 4. Although not in the prizes the young players won praise from the audience and organisers for both their playing and behaviour throughout a 16 hour day.

In addition members of the two bands have spent the run up to Christmas supporting their local community with performances for late-night shopping, in elderly persons’ homes and for hospital patients.

The Newstead band’s concert programme for the year concludes on Thursday December 30th when ‘Newstead Play Big Band’ at the Newstead Miners Welfare (see 4BR classified for details).

2005 will be another busy year for the band. Confirmed activities already include the conductors’ workshop for the midlands area contest, taking delivery of new uniforms, hosting a return ‘twinning’ visit from Ronchin in France and appearing with Aled Jones at Chatsworth House.
