Double success for Simon Minshall!

Prestigious award for 13 year old trombonist from the National Children's Orchestra.


13 year old Bass Trombonist Simon Minshall from Astley, is delighted to have been awarded the National Children’s Orchestra’s prestigious Liz Rorison prize for the 2nd year in a row! He was presented with the award at the National Children’s Orchestra Christmas Concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, on Sunday 19th December. The award is made each year to a member of the orchestra who has not only made a significant musical contribution during the year, but who has also actively participated in NCO activities, shown care and consideration for others, willingness to help, and made newcomers welcome.

Simon is a pupil of Chetham’s School of Music, where he studies with Les Storey and Kevin Price. 2005 will be his 3rd year in the National Children’s Orchestra. However, next year he will have a new partner in the brass section. Sitting next to him will be his younger sister, Samantha, age 12, who plays Tuba! Samantha is also on a high note this Christmas, having recently found out that she has been awarded a place in the Main Orchestra! She is currently a member of the Under 12 Orchestra. Samantha studies Tuba with Ewan Easton at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music, and attends Fred Longworth High School.

Simon and Samantha lead very busy musical lives. In addition to playing in the National Children’s Orchestra, they are both members of the National Children’s Brass Band, Astley Youth Band, and Bolton Youth Brass Band. In addition to this, Samantha plays for Wigan Youth Brass Band, and Simon plays for Bolton Youth Jazz Orchestra.
