Judges to return to muted ways?

Are the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators going to return to past ways and become muted to the public once more?

It has been revealed to 4BR that there may be some interesting developments to be aired at the forthcoming Annual General Meeting of the Association of Brass Band Adjudicators, which is to be held at Gawthorpe on Sunday 8th January.

Sources have revealed to 4BR that a proposal may well be put forward to recommend that the adjudicators refrain once more from making comments to the audience at the end of major contests4BR

Sources have revealed to 4BR that a proposal may well be put forward to recommend that the adjudicators refrain once more from making comments to the audience at the end of major contests.

This step is seen by many to be a return to the general convention that was deemed appropriate in years gone by and it is believed that it will bring the judges into line with the professional adjudicators at international events such as ‘Cardiff Singer of the World’ and the ‘Leeds Piano Competition’.

No apparent concrete reasons

Although our sources state that no apparent concrete reason has been given to return to the situation where paying members of the public will not be informed of why a decision has been made, or what criteria was used in reaching that decision, it is believed that it may well have been been brought about by comments made at the West of England Championships in 2005 concerning Bryan Hurdley’s remarks in the Fourth Section and the remarks made by Dr. John Pickard in relation to the process of adjudication at the National Finals in London this year.

4BR understands that not all members of the Association are happy with such a proposal if it is passed and that a number of members will in fact bring their concerns to the meeting itself.

Meeting details

The meeting takes place at Gawthorpe J&I School, High Street, Gawthorpe, Ossett, Yorkshire at 1.00pm on Sunday 8th January. The school is situated approximately 2 miles west of junction 40 of the M1 motorway.

Members of the Association are requested to contact Malcolm Brownbill as soon as possible, whilst those members of the general public who are interested in the presentation, ‘Performance Assessment Criteria’ to be made by Alan Morrison at 2.00pm should also contact Malcolm as soon as possible as there are only a limited number of places available.
