Audience walk out at Shirland

It seems there was a bit of a politcal storm at a recent Shirland Welfare Training Concert — all started by a shellfish salesman!

A Friday-night shellfish salesman trying to sell jellied eels and whelks to the performers as they played and the audience walking out at the interval was all in a nights work for Shirland Welfare Training Band at a recent Social Club Christmas concert in Derby.

Unfortunately for the band, a slow-burning committee problem came to a colossal head on concert night and the resulting walk out was in protest at disciplinary action recently meted out to a club memberShirland Welfare Training Band

It was definitely a first when the audience got up en-masse and left the club halfway through the concert, but not surprisingly, it was nothing to do with the quality of the music on offer.

Unfortunately for the band, a slow-burning committee problem came to a colossal head on concert night and the resulting walk out was in protest at disciplinary action recently meted out to a club member.
During the interval, a carol-singing reindeer made its stage debut, before the band played the second half of the concert to the few remaining members.

The band and travelling friends then helped to make up some of the shortfall in bar takings! It’s a “Ding Dong Christmas” all right!
