The news was advised at the band's Christmas breakup on 19th December.

Vice President, Jonathon Durdin, said that "the band is extremely grateful to the Premier & Minister for the Arts, Mike Rann, for providing the grant and enabling the band to mark this unique banding milestone".

The grant is for the commissioning of a major work to be performed during the band's sesquicentenary year which commences in October 2006. The world premiere of the work is planned for the Australian National Band Championships in Melbourne at Easter in 2007.

The composer is a prominent and very highly regarded Australian musician. He has many compositions across a wide variety of genres and instrumental and vocal combinations, including brass and wind band. This will be a very significant contribution to the large scale brass band repertoire.

The commissioning of this work is an initiative of Robert Hower, Principal Conductor of the Tanunda Town Band and Elder Conservatorium Wind Ensemble. The major work is part of the band's long-term development program.

The band's anniversary is to be celebrated by a number of concerts and official events. The South Australian Band Association will be coinciding the 2007 State Championship with the final weekend of celebrations, culminating in a street party outside the Tanunda Hotel, site of the band's first performance on the 6th October 1857. The band is hoping that many banding friends from around Australia will be abe to make the trip to Tanunda to celebrate with the "oldest band in the southern hemisphere".
