BFBB Chairman's thanks

The BFBB Chairman, Robert Morgan passes on his thanks for all its member bands efforts in 2006 and tells 4BR about a very busy and exciting 2007.

The Chairman of the British Federation of Brass Bands, Robert Morgan would like to thank all its members for their efforts in 2006 as he looks as ahead to a very busy 2007 with three majors events on the horizon.

Robert's press release reads as follows:

'As we come to the end of 2006 I would like to pass on my thanks to all BFBB member bands for their continued support and encourage as many bands as possible to become members next year.

Membership around 300

Our membership hovers around the 300 mark — easily the biggest representation of brass bands in the UK and the more bands we have in membership the more we can achieve.

2006 has been a busy year for bands generally and our flagship organisation, the British Brass Band Registry, has again dealt with all the registration requirements of bands, including the liaison with registries in Scotland and Wales.

Many thanks are due to Colin Johnson, our Registry and Office Manager, who goes about his work with little fuss, organising the needs of bands and their players, as required, for contests all over the country.

Busy year ahead

2007 is definitely going to be a year to remember for the BFBB, with three major events to organise.

The first one will be the National Youth Championships at the Royal Northern College in Manchester on Sunday, 29th April, in conjunction with our new sponsors, United Co-operative Ltd. This will be quickly followed by the European Championships in Birmingham, with the contest taking place on the 4th and 5th May.

Full details of this event will be published in the New Year, but early signs indicate that we will have more brass band countries represented in Birmingham than ever before.

We need the support of the British public for the Europeans and tradition has it that hundreds will be here from the Continent; tickets are now on sale at http://www.boxoffice.necgroup.co.uk.

The English National Brass Band Championships will take place on Saturday, 30th June at the Guild Hall, Preston where bands will compete on Peter Graham's "On Alderley Edge". The winning band will be invited to represent England at the 2008 European Championships in Stavanger, Norway.

Congratulations Markus

Moving on, congratulations to Markus Bach for his special award from 4barsrest. I have had the pleasure of working with Markus since the formation of EBBA in 1994. Under his guidance the European Championships have now become a week-long festival, with bands from every corner of Europe taking part. His work and dedication to the Europeans has been exemplary and although he has had some equally dedicated people working with him, as we all know, to be successful the organisation has to be well directed.

Finally, the BFBB would like to wish all bandsmen/bandswomen throughout the world — via 4barsrest — a very happy and peaceful Christmas and a prosperous and successful New Year.

As we all strive to meet the demands of the modern era, there's nothing quite like going to band practice and making music with your friends and companions — having a laugh and joke and some socialising afterwards — it's a unique and healthy hobby and we must all work hard to secure its future'.

Chairman, BFBB
