Youth band's debut performance

The Norfolk Wherry Band continues to develop with the first performance of its Youth Band and receives two new instruments as well.

The Norfolk Wheery Brass has informed 4BR that their success story has continued with the news that the newly formed Norfolk Wherry Youth Brass Band has made its first public performance.

Grant

The Youth Band was formed earlier in the year and has benefited from a £10,000 Awards for All grant for new instruments that are being put to good use by local youngsters, some of whom had not played before joining the band.

Under the musical direction of Frank Barnett and with the help of volunteers from the senior band, Norfolk Wherry Youth Brass Band has made such good progress that they were able to open the third annual RAF Association Christmas Concert in style at the Stalham High School with a selection of carols and other music. The young musicians received tremendous applause from a near full house at the concert on Wednesday 13 December.

New instruments

Following their performance, Frank Barnett received a presentation to the youth band of two new instruments, a baritone horn and a flugel horn, worth £1500. The instruments were donated by Broadland Music Ltd of Norwich. Broadland Music's co-directors Andy Craze and Mike Thorn were the founding Musical Director and Chairman of Norfolk Wherry Brass.

Mike told us of his sense of pride to see the youth band on stage and performing so well so soon. "I am so pleased to see these youngsters playing at such a high standard already", he said. "It takes a lot of hard work and dedication by the conductor, the tutors, the parents, and of course the players to be able to achieve a result like this. They should all be very proud of themselves; they are the future for brass music in Norfolk”

After the Youth Band’s performance, the Norfolk Wherry Brass senior band continued the concert, which raised funds for the RAFA Wings Appeal and Norfolk Wherry Brass.
