2007 4BRDU Band of the Year

Here we go — the 4barsrest Downunder Band of the Year for 2007. See what you think...

2007 4BRDU Band of the Year

Once again we have the difficult task of chosing the 4BRDU Band of the Year. During 2007, there have been some fantastic individual performances on the solo platform as well as from within the ranks.

4BRDU has been fortunate enough to be able attend both NZ and Australian National Championships, as well as several other contest at regional and state levels.

The approach this year was to decide on the Musical Director and then work with the MD to choose the band. There was total agreement in all but one of the positions.

The criteria for selection was nothing too strict other than just an overall impression the player has made on us throughout the year, whether it be in a band situation or as a soloist.

As was the case last year, we have decided to include only players who have been primarily in the Downunder part of the world over the last 12 months. There are many fine performers who could have been top contenders for a seat in the 4BRDU band. Steve Rudhall, Stephanie Barrett, Murray Borthwick, Rosie Pearce, Brenden Wheeler, Edward Kennedy, Rob Kavanagh, David Mallett, Ben Beavis are those who we know of who have had a great year playing overseas.

Of course, we cannot fail to mention the incredible progress Jason Katsikaris has made in the UK as a Musical Director.

Similar to last year, we have used the NZ system, and have opted for the configuration of 31 players.

Here is our decision...

MUSICAL DIRECTOR: Howard Taylor

We tried extra hard again not to choose Howard Taylor for this role but how can you ignore the success this man has had in 2007.

His successes this year include three in a row with Brisbane Excelsior with another Australian Nationals win; followed by a history breaking win at the New Zealand Nationals a few months later. The second Stars of Brass concert featured soloists from Australia, America and the UK; whilst the tour of the National Band of New Zealand with James Morrison was of the highest quality. Early in 2007, Howard also won the Ern Keller Band of the Year, for the second year in a row, with Waratah Brass.
