MBE for Robert Morgan

The New Year’s Honours List sees BFBB Chairman awarded MBE.

The release of the New Year’s Honours List has brought delight to Robert Morgan, Chairman of the British Federation of Brass Bands, as he has been awarded the MBE for ‘Services to Brass Band Music’.

Speaking to 4BR Robert said that the award had come as a complete surprise and that he had no inkling that he was to receive the honour. “I’m deeply proud, privileged and pleased to both be nominated and to receive the MBE. It’s not only a personal recognition but I think it is also recognition for the brass band movement in this country.”

Robert revealed that he had been nominated over 13 months ago by a family friend and fellow bandsperson Mary Harris of the Drybrook Band, and he first found out about his award six weeks ago when he received official notification through the post. The award is posted in The London Gazette today.

Notified six weeks ago

”Mary has been a friend for many years and it was she who set the wheels in motion so to speak. She managed to get all the letters of support from various sources including EBBA and from friends and colleagues in UK banding. The letter came about six weeks ago and I’ve been informed that we will hear in the next five months or so when it will be presented.”

50 years in banding

Robert recently celebrated 50 years of banding with the Lydbrook Band, whilst he has also been an active member of the British Federation of Brass Bands for over 15 years—the last four of which as its Chairman. He was also a founder member of EBBA and has been a member on various local and regional brass band committees for over 40 years.

Lifelong passion

It has been a lifelong passion for brass banding that now sees him gain deserved recognition for the amount of time and energy he has put into serving the brass band movement.

”I’m looking forward to receiving the award, and may try to get Lydbrook to come up and pay the music at the Palace!” he said. “That would be great not just for me but also for my family and friends who have supported me all these years.”

The congratulations of the whole of the brass band movement go out to Robert.
