Ethereal Marzella on spellbinding form

The 4BR Player of the Year keeps a packed audience in Cornwall spellbound with her playing.

The ethereal sounds of the first performance of 'A Hebridean Lullaby', played on the baritone by Katrina Marzella, kept a packed audience spellbound at St Michael’s Church in Newquay on Saturday 30th December.

The Concert came at the end of the Christmas Residential Course of the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, whose guest conductor, Philip Harper, composed the piece especially for Katrina to play at the Concert. It rounded off a year in which she won the title of British Open Solo Champion of The Year 2006, graduated with Distinction from The Royal Northern College of Music and was also the recipient of the 4BR Player of Year award.

During the four day course she gave a Master Class and coached the baritone section as well as playing and rehearsing four other solos with the Band.

seventy young musicians in the Band were delighted to welcome back the leading young conductor, composer and teacher, Philip Harper, following his success with them at their Easter 2005 Golden Jubilee Course. His instinctive rapport with the young musicians, whose ages range from eleven to twenty one, was apparent throughout the course, as he rehearsed them in music by Tchaikovsky, Fucik, Rimmer, Barry Manilow and Leonard Bernstein, as well as several compositions of his own.

Hard work

The hard work, aided by the team of local Tutors led by David Loukes, came to fruition in the Gala Concert, when he directed them in polished performances which were greeted with acclaim by the Musicians’ parents, civic representatives and brass band enthusiasts from all over Cornwall.

In thanking all concerned the Chairman of The Cornwall Youth Brass Band, Leonard Adams, particularly praised the parents of the young musicians for their support in giving them the chance to take part in the Course. This gave them the opportunity to stretch themselves musically in the company of their peers from twenty one parent brass bands all over Cornwall, guided and inspired by some of the top musicians in the brass band movement.
