Death of Tommy Henton

The death of a fine bandsman has been reported.

4BR has been informed of the death of one of the Midlands finest bandsman. Tom or Tommy Henton as he liked to be known, passed away peasefully on Christmas Eve at the Manners Nursing home in Ikeston at the age of 97.

Tom had played cornet for many years with the Long Eaton Silver Prize Band, and was a member of the band when they were among the twenty four bands invited to contest the first annual May Championship contest at Belle Vue in 1922. In the late 1930s and 1945 — 48 he was MD of Long Eaton, and in 1966 was Principal Cornet when they were crowned as the Midlands 3rd Section champions.

Adrian Drewitt Derwent Brass told 4BR: "I myself will remember Tom as the person who first taught me to play as a boy, and feel proud to be one of the last people to sit next to him on a contest stage with Ilkeston Brass when the Midlands area was last held in Derby at the assembly rooms back in the 1980s. Tom did still play for many years after for his own pleasure and with small brass groups in the area."

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
