Christmas Countdown — 5 days to go

We all complain about the draw—don’t we now? So how many bands won off the number 1 draw in 2007?



Hard to find out, but just how did bands get on with the balls on the bag this year at the major contests?

We’ve looked at the following contests in all sections to find out our results: Butlins, Yeovil, Regional Championships, Europeans, Grand Shield, Senior Cup, Senior Trophy, Masters, English Nationals, British Open, National Finals, Lower Section National Finals, Pontins, Brass in Concert and even the Norwegian Championships.

Kelly's Eye

Did the curse of Kelly’s Eye strike again, or did being drawn the earliest of early doors mean a marker that couldn’t be beaten?

That’s 76 separate contests we looked at (it could have been more but we didn’t have the draws for others to hand).

So how many number 1 drawn bands actually won then?

Famous Five

Step forward the famous five!

Brosley in the First Section regional championships in London as well as Formby, Crosskeys and Buckhaven in the Fourth Section at the same events in the North West, Wales and Scotland respectively.

The fifth member of the 2007 Number 1 Club is Brass Band Pfeffersberg who won the B Section of the Europeans off the number 1 draw, although there was only three bands in the contest on the day.

As for the rest?

Not one major championship contest was won off number 1 as far as we could find out all year—the nearest being Redbridge winning off number 2 at Stevenage.

However, a surprising of number 1 draws came in the frame at the Areas—10 bands in total (including those winners) came in the top 2 and qualified for Harrogate (but not the Royal Albert Hall).

Chinnor Silver

November 20 • Despite winning the 2nd section at the GBBA contest we still need a Bb BASS to complete our line up. Good but realistic book of concerts and concerts planned.. We have well attended rehearsals on a Wednesday in our own bandroom.

Hucknall & Linby Brass

November 20 • Hucknall and Linby Band - 2nd section- Require a front row cornet player. We rehearse Thursdays 7.30 -9.30 in Hucknall, Nottingham. With great transport links to the city centre and the universities.

Newstead Brass

November 18 • Bb Cornet (position negotiable). . Newstead Brass, established Midlands Championship section, have opportunity for an additional cornet player. Suitable for experienced player or someone looking to take the next step in their development.
