FABB gains momentum

The inaugral Australasian Open, an initiative of the Federation of Australasian Brass bands, is gaining strength as bands confirm their intention to attend.

Federation of Australasian Brass Bands

The Australasian Open, being held 25 & 26 October 2008, is beginning to take shape as almost half of the invited bands have pledged their commitment to the event.

Bands to say "Yes"

Woolston Brass, The Trusts Waitakere Brass, St Kilda Brass, Footscray-Yarraville, and Brisbane Excelsior have each given notice of their intention to attend the contest prior to the February deadline for responses.

Early discussion between the FABB organisers and most other bands is looking very positive. However, Dalewool Auckland Brass has confirmed its intention not to attend.

Other invited bands will also need to give this contest their attention with the 2008 Gold Coast Indy just releasing its race dates — the same weekend as the Australasian Open.

Traditionally, the Indy has been held the weekend prior to the one chosen by FABB for the Australasian Open.

Airfares into Brisbane and Cooloongatta will be soaked up very quickly making it difficult for bands to get organised if they leave their decision making until well into the new year.

Gunnedah gets invite

The Gunnedah Shire band, based on its 2006 performance in New Zealand and the fact that it is going to the 2008 Australian Nationals has now also been invited to the 2008 Australasian Open.

Due to the Indy clash, the organisers thought it best to send out an invitation now rather than wait until the Australian Nationals in March when the band would have more difficulties with the booking of airfares and accommodation.

Registration of players

The registration of players is now available on the FABB website. It requires photo ID to be uploaded along with player details.

This registration is compulsory for all players intending to play with a band in the Australasian Open, and is also available to those players in bands who have not been invited.

Attending bands may need player assistance to make up the 30 brass player limit.

The website will be a place for bands to see which other players are available and suitable to fill in the holes they might have positions they wish to boost.
