Bodmin mourn loss of bandsman

Mike Pickett, one of the most popular bandsmen in the West of England banding scene has passed away.

The Bodmin Band has announced with great sadness the passing of Michael Pickett, aged 58, on 4th January 2007.

Mike started playing when he was 8 years of age with Egham Band, who were in the Third Section at the time, becoming principal cornet at the age of 15. He joined Guildford Band on soprano when he was 17 under the conductorship of Frank Renton before moving to Birkenhead by joining Cammell Laird band on soprano. He joined Bodmin Town Band in 1970 on solo horn under the conductorship of John Berryman.

Mike played at all the major competitions in England except the British Open, and played on the Royal Albert Hall stage 9 times in his long career.

Mike will be dearly missed by Bodmin Town Band, and details of the funeral will be announced on their website shortly at www.bodmintownband.com
