McCabe helps explore classic work

Composer John McCabe has been throwing light on his classic test piece 'Cloudcatcher Fells' in Durham.

McCabe

A recent special visitor to Durham University’s conductor’s course was composer John McCabe.

Prior to a masterclass given by the Fishburn Band led by Ray Farr, the composer of the classic 'Cloudcatcher Fells' spoke to the brass band conductors on a range of musical issues.

Insight

Of particular interest was the composer’s insight into his much-loved test piece and an examination of his original manuscript threw light on many details within the piece.

Showcase

John McCabe also took the opportunity to showcase his fine abilities as a pianist plus his use of pictures and analogies also helped in a gaining a greater understanding of his music.

But it was his final summation on contemporary banding which left the strongest impression: "If you don’t programme original brass band pieces, it’s a betrayal!"
