Marple's diamond geezer

They don't make bandsmen like Mike Jackson anymore, after the modest baritone players receives an award for his 60 years of service to the banding movement.

Mike Jackson

The Marple Band annual Christmas concert became a truly memorable occasion this year when baritone player, Mike Jackson, was presented with a diamond ‘Long Service Award’ by the North West Brass Band Association.

60 years of service

Secretary of NWBBA, Shirley Woodward, was invited by Marple Band Chairman Peter Hargreaves, to present the award during the second half of the festive performance in recognition of an incredible 60 years service to the banding movement.

Mike began playing when he joined the now defunct Romiley Band in 1952, before later moving to St. Chad’s Band and finally Marple, where he has remained as a wonderful servant since the band reformed in the 1960s.

Tribute

Band President Eileen Murphy read out a tribute from former Marple Band MD, Garry Cutt.

‘The Governor’, as he is affectionately known, referred to Mike as "an absolute stalwart", whose "unstinting dedication should be a lesson to all."

True pro

Always the true professional bandsman, on accepting the Diamond Award to a standing ovation, with his typical grace and humility, Mike then returned to his seat to finish the concert.
