Le Dyke Noir

A wonderful 1969 film featuring Black Dyke on tour to France has just been released by the British Film Institute.

Black Dyke

Another wonderful piece of brass band history has just been released by the British Film Institute — this time featuring Black Dyke.

Roubaix

It follows the Queensbury Band (accompanied by a stately rendition of their famous signature march) on a trip to France in June 1969 to the town of Roubaix, which was celebrating the 500th anniversary of being awarded a royal charter to process wool.

Directed by Roy Newsome, Black Dyke is seen in their resplendent outdoor marching uniforms (complete with red striped trousers and caps) as they provide the musical entertainment to a three-team football tournament featuring Bradford City, Borussia Monchengladbach and the home favourites.

Lost players

However, the film doesn't recall the fact that eight members of the band missed the initial flight to Paris after getting lost in Heathrow's terminal. As Roy Newsome recalled in his 150th anniversary book on the band, the octet had to catch another flight, plus a train — only arriving at 5.00am the next morning.
